TV Series
Notes American adaptation of the British game show of the same title. Initially aired as a two-week "special event" in 1999, and was one of the highest rated shows of the year, leading to it continuing as a regular series, often airing several times a week. This game show is credited with reviving the "prime time network game show" format on US TV, which had fallen out of favour after the game show rigging scandals of the 1950s (since then game shows aired in evening hours had been generally syndicated, not network). After Millionaire, every US network responded by launching new evening game shows, as well as competition series such as Survivor and Big Brother. The genre continued into the mid-2010s. The network version of Millionaire ended in 2002, but has continued in syndication, with Philbin only hosting the network version. In 2004, a spin-off hosted by Philbin, Who Wants to Be A Super Millionaire aired in two limited runs, with a $10 million top prize. A further 11-episode 10th Anniversary Celebration edition aired in 2009. Although Regis Philbin is the show's most famous host (and his "Is that your final answer?" became an early-2000s catchphrase), the longest-serving host was in fact Meredith Vieira. Images
