From Monolith: "You leave Jan alone, she's not for the likes of you.

She's mine............. all mine...............Mwahaha"

Oh, dear, I think the lust for Jan Smithers really is getting a bit too much for poor ol' Monolith.
Mono, ol' chum, follow the advise of The Eagles and Take It Easy or you'll end up with a Heartache Tonight!

@Monolith. Very few sitcoms stand the test of time especially if their humor is rooted in a particular era. I consider WKRP a time capsule and so I view it in that context. I remember one very powerful episode where they took on the issue of censorship in radio where a religious leader tried to dictate what the station could play and took particular issue with John Lennon's "Imagine". (I think the episode aired not long after Lennon died, too.) It was a not-very-subtle attack on Rev. Jerry Falwell and the "Moral Majority" faction that was quite powerful in the US back in the day.

I watched and loved this when it aired, never missed, Jan was lovely to look at and the show was really funny, great memories.
Herb & Les were a joy.

But saw it last year and ................. well, let's just say I wish I'd left it as a wonderful memory.
Jan obviously was still hot, but the jokes............ meh.
Pity.

Looking back at the series, I do think over time the whole Jan Smithers thing became a very subtle dig at the whole sex symbol concept. Everyone went nuts for Loni Anderson, calling her the new Marilyn Monroe, and she even got cast as Jayne Mansfield for a TV movie during her time on the show. Yet on the show itself they slowly built up Bailey as the sexier of the two characters by making her the anti-Jennifer. I'm sure a lot of people have fond memories of the episode where Johnny Fever spent a few nights living at Bailey's apartment... I don't think they ever went in that direction with Jennifer!

All I know is when the New WKRP in Cincinatti aired a decade later, even though they brought back a good number of the cast (with Loni making a guest appearance), I all but ignored the show because Jan Smithers wasn't in it.

As for the show itself, I am so glad they were able to rectify the music rights issues for the latest DVD version. The first DVD release was a joke because they were forced to remove most of the music, even though the music is as much a character on the show as the cast.
