Sequel series to 1957-1962's Maverick, with Frank playing the son of the character played by Roger Moore in the original series. James Garner, the best-known cast member of the original, made a guest appearance in the first episode of this series, which was preceded by a 1978 pilot film that was titled The New Maverick.

The series was cancelled after only six episodes of eight produced were aired, though the complete series aired outside the US. A year later, another attempt was made at reviving the format as Bret Maverick, bringing back Garner and Jack Kelly from the original, but omitting the new Ben Maverick character.
