Notes

You're in the Picture was a game show hosted by Jackie Gleason. After overwhelming negative response to its first episode and the concept of the game, Gleason himself cancelled the series. The second "episode" of You're in the Picture consisted of a 30-minute monologue by Gleason apologizing for the first episode and explaining how it went wrong. Due to commitments and contracts to advertisers, Gleason was required to continue delivering a TV program, so the series was thereafter retitled The Jackie Gleason Show and converted into a talk show format for the remainder of its brief run.

Since I added this back in 2015, copies of the extant gameshow episode and the apology have been posted to Youtube and Archive.org. Added title screen, albeit in low quality.

No image of this show's title screen appears to be available online. I have instead uploaded a capture taken from the apology episode. There's a timecode but this is the only version of the episode available. I choose this image because it shows some of the artwork that was created for this game. The idea was celebrities were to stick their heads through holes in the artwork and then based on clues given by a panel had to guess the subject of the image they were a part of (in this example a rather racist - even for its day - depiction of stereotypical Indians about to behead John Brown but Pocahontas intervenes). Ironically this is actually little different than a popular Who's Line is it Anyway segment where Colin Mochre stands in front of a green screen and is digitally placed into some event or movie and has to guess what it is.

Gleason's apology episode is available online and is a classic piece of television, both in terms of how frank and honest the actor was about the show's failings, but also in how it enlightened viewers of the day about how the business of television works. Legend has it Gleason got rave reviews for his mea culpa. It actually wasn't the first time he did something like this; during one episode of his live 1950s series a piece of scenery malfunctioned preventing Gleason from continuing with the episode. With 10 minutes to fill he spent part of it comically tying his tie and ad-libbing jokes to the studio audience and viewers. "I wouldn't wish this spot on a leopard!" he said.
