Stonehenge: The Lost Circle Revealed (2021)
Probably a lot simpler than you'd imagine Quad...

(In terms of construction principle, even though there's still work involved)

... My own theory is simply this:

Dig a ditch... Drag and drop stones in it, then pull them upright... Then back fill / bury them with only the tops of these uprights showing level with the surrounding ground... Then drag lintel / capstones onto them until they are in position...

... Then finally, excavate the surrounding earth to new ground level.

Other than dragging the stones, any group of people with a bucket and spade, and enough time, can remove the earth.

(Certainly easier than hosting 30 ton stones 30 feet in the air with hypothetical, fantastical lifting kit)

Al you need is cows, cows, cows :)

Now look at Avebury... Measure depth of ditch, and compare with height of great sarsens at Stonehenge.

Great new research, but honestly, if I see another "reconstruction" of people attempting to move large heavy stones with ropes, I think I'll scream!

The Aurochs was an animal related to modern cows, but much larger... and seeing it is estimated that in general, a four legged beasty can pull about one and a half times it's own body weight, I'd like to think that the people who were smart enough at least to build these monuments in the first place were smart enough not to try and lug them with multitudes of men themselves, but use these huge animals instead.

500 men, or a few Aurochs' (?)

I don't think they could ever make too many of these!

... It's like the Archers, for our generation.

(I sometimes see detectorists when I'm out looking at a rock or two in a field for my megalithic purposes... Always a nod and a "how'd ye do")

It's important to remember some simple rules when taking part in University Challenge:

1. Never look the Paxman directly in the eye; The Paxman regards this as a challenge to it's authority.

2. The Paxman's vision is based on confidence and contempt; Do not draw the Paxman's gaze by being overly confident, or underly confident... in fact, just sit there if at all possible and say nothing.

3. The Paxman regards a failure to answer an impossibly complex question correctly as an affront to humanity, and only goes to exacerbate it's profound air of being a quiz show presenter entirely against it's will; Remember, the key feature of Paxmanian behaviour is to always give the impression of wanting to be almost anywhere but where it is at any given moment.

4. The Paxman regards a failure to answer a simple question correctly as a hanging offence: Do not linger!!!

5. The Paxman will, on occasion, accept an answer that is close enough to that printed on it's card... but will demand your soul in exchange later.... be prepared to trade.

As the Paxman undoubtedly would say if broadcasting rules would permit: "Untill next time... Piss off and leave me be!"

Recent controversy: Pac-man said in an interview that some of the starter questions were edited out if they had too long a string of unanswered questions...

..great, so it's not enough that these (for the most part) kids are exponentially smarter than me in the first instance, they are made to appear even more so for editorial reasons.

No wonder I had that University Challenge based melt-down that time when I was trying to keep up with them, and ended up cracking under the pressure, and running down the road in my underpants, weeping, and attempting to recite Pi to fifty thousand decimal places.

I usually aim to get 5-10 answers right, and usually get about 3-4 :(

But one tip is that when it comes to the highly complicated maths questions, the rule of thumb is that the more convoluted the question, the simpler the answer...

just answer: 1, 0, or -1, and it's a fair bet you're near the mark.

(Like the pub quiz football questions, just answer Uruguay :)

This is the only programme I can watch with my nephews that I don't feel like I'm being psychologically assaulted by some relentless day-glo ad campaign.

... seriously, try watching just five minutes of kids TV now, and I challenge you to discover where the ads end, and the programme begins.

-But I must confess,I still actually enjoy this!

Oooh, that Christmas /New Year special was good...

... Just wish we didn't have to wait an eternity for new seerizes.

(Whole glaciers have melted since they last got around to making the last one... and Free-batch and Cumberman have only made a couple of dubious 'Obbit adaptations and the like in the meantime. I think they'd have been better advised to have concentrated on creating a larger body of work with this.
