Don't let the welsh dialogue (with sub-titles) put you off this compelling drama. A good solid police drama with lots of little twists and turns and smaller sub-plots to keep you engrossed.

Series One and Two both are equally viewable and I would recommend you spend sometime getting sucked into this series.

Available on BBC iPlayer as at August 2020.

Rated 8/10
Based on Celeste Ng's 2017 bestseller, "Little Fires Everywhere" this mini-TV series (spanning nearly 8 hours) follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives.

I found it an interesting and engaging story line that was helped no end by its star cast. It was interesting how, as the series played out, me and my partner chose which character's side we were on only to find that maybe all the characters are very similar and in their own way flawed.

Starts with a big fire scene (not a spoiler) that then has you guessing all the way through who set it.......is it as simple as it appears? Watch and find out!

If you enjoy good crime drama such as Fargo and The Killing the this is one for you.

The acting is great, the story-lines compelling and the setting, the vast cold Canadian landscape is wonderful.

An enjoyable romp through the classic Dracula story. Broadcast as three 90 minute episodes the show has it all, drama, suspense, a little bit of comedy and of course horror.

The BBC has done well in commissioning such a well written show (by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat of Sherlock fame). The excellent online reviews such as "bloody stunning" are well justified. What you get is an update, well shot , adaptation of the original vampire story.

Whilst not a true devotee of the horror genre I thoroughly recommend give this a viewing.

Killing Eve (2018 - 2022)
Rated 9/10
Another top quality BBC series that I recommend taking the time to watch. Eight 40 minute episodes that I personally watched over two nights.

Based on the Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings the series serves up a feast of subtle British humour and action carried out with quality acting by the players. Although not billed as such, this drama has a thick underlying element of black humour that just makes it a pleasure to watch.

Sandra Oh as Eve is excellent but Jodie Comer as Villanelle steals the show with a character that you can't help to adore given her quirky, if some what, dark and bizarre behaviour (but then as a psychopathic contract killer what can you expect).

The background stories of the main players fills out over the series but there is obviously a lot more to see and learn and episode 8 leaves me in no doubt that there will be a future series (or two).

The story is based on a ex-soldier now employed as part of the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London's Metropolitan Police Service. Issues stemming from his Afghanistan service are affecting both his private and work life as the officer assigned to protect the Home Secretary.

The whole series moves at a very fast pace with a well written story-line that has many twists and turns to keep you guessing up to the last episode.

This one lives up to its hype, I highly recommend watching this series.

Big Little Lies (2017 - 2019)
Rated 9/10
They say the that the book is always better than than the film, but having read the excellent novel by Liane Moriarty I can assure you that that this series is as good as, if not better than the book.

Shot on location in the wonderful Monterey, California and its surrounding area, the story tells the tale of a group of mothers who on the outside look to have wonderful complete lives but each have their own (big) little lies that are told to just let them cope/survive with their lives.

The screen writing is superb and it quickly draws you into the storyline as the character's lives are slowly looked at. Through struggles in their marriages, parental problems, sexual jealously the mystery deepens with each instalment. You know from the first episode there is a killing, but it is not until the end (of season 1) that you find out who is killed and by whom. In the meanwhile you yourself will find several possible victims with a growing list of possible killers.

The acting is excellent and by the way the soundtrack is brilliant!

The first season closely follows the story set out in the novel however I see that there will be a second season so I await with interest to see where the series will go next.

Review
Take away the hype surrounding the bare chested Turner, which the majority of the media initially focused on, this is a historical romp on par with anything broadcast in recent years.

I myself am not always a great fan of this type of drama however with its violence, raunchiness, romance, intrigue and humour set against the magnificent backdrop of the Cornish coast this series draws you in and before you know it you are hooked. The characters are well cast and like all good dramas there are heroes, villains, fools and beauties.

A well written and well filmed BBC period drama that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I would recommend that you should give this one a look, I think like me you may be surprised at how good it is.

Roll on season 4 in 2018!

The Missing (2014 - 2016)
Rated 8/10
Season 1 tells over 8 episodes the story of a young english boy that goes missing whilst the family holiday in France.
I personally thought that it mirrored many of the issues I had read regarding the real life case of Madeline McCann - english parents dealing with a foreign police force that works differently, the language difficulties, police officers with their own personal agendas and the dealings with journalists to name just a few.
It is a compelling slow burning drama that kept me engaged and wanting to see the next episode.
A great British drama that is worth a watch.

A teacher is shown a time portal that takes him back to 1960.
He aims to investigate the period running up to the assassination of JFK and to stop them before the killing takes place.
In the three year period leading from his arrival in 1960 he gets sidetracked by life in the early 60s and the fact that past does not want to be changed.
The mini series was based on the Stephen King book but written and developed for TV by Barbara Carpenter.
I have read the book and enjoyed it and it is a joy to see a Stephen King title filmed well. The story is perfect for a mini-series and the story line has a plenty of interest ranging from historical fact, a bit of a love story and plenty of drama, suspense and action.
Makes you think, other than saving JFK, what you might do if you were able to head back to the 1960s - maybe wait until 1963 and buy a handful of those black and gold Parlaphone records by that new band The Beatles to bring to the future.

Cucumber (2015)
Rated 8/10
Shown on UK Channel 4 the show has lots of adult themed content (swearing, nudity, etc.). The core subject (gay life in Manchester) can also be off putting to some however I found this series very enjoyable, at times very funny, as well as addressing some very serious issues.

The drama follows Henry Best, a gay middle aged insurance salesman addressing his own issues regarding his relationships and sexuality. Following a split with a long term partner he moves in with small group of much younger men who seem to live the lifestyle he thinks he so desperately wants.

The series consisted of eight episodes all written by Russell T Davies.

A lttle bit of trivia; the title was inspired by a scientific study into the male erection which divided the erection into a hardness scale consisting of tofu, peeled banana, banana, and cucumber.
