albert 27th Jan 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Recommended Records Sampler (1982) | I transcribed the details from the insert, text sometimes differs on the record labels.
eg the Ron Pate track on side 4 is called "Fun In The Fundus" on the label.
|
albert 27th Jan 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumBuzzcocks - Love Bites (1978) | Unusual sleeve added, probably a test pressing, it is embossed but there is no printing on the sleeve (note the yellow bits on the back are from rubbing next to the Different Kind Of Tension LP) .

albert 21st Jan 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Superstars Of The 70's (1973) | I got this compilation in an auction joblot, about 30 years ago, and its been in storage ever since.
You can see by the track listing this is definitely an American overview, and somewhat lacking the exciting sounds coming from the UK at the time, so no Bowie, no T.Rex, no glam basically, all of the sounds that would eventually lead to punk (by that I mean British punk).

albert 28th Mar 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumUstad Munawar Ali Khan - Vocal Recital (1975) | First record by Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, traditional 'gayaki' style (and other) Hindustani Indian music. I am not going to attempt to break down the track listing into the variant parts.

albert 28th Mar 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Early Music Consort Of London - Two Renaissance Dance Bands (1971) | Some, or all copies, have a textured sleeve.

albert 31st Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumKate Bush - Never For Ever (2018) | Sounds great, though I don't have the original pressing to compare it with but I do own the singles. On the LP version of Army Dreamers the rhythmic sample of the gun being loaded seems to be down in the mix but I cannot remember if that was always the case. Anyway I like this remaster, it has clarity and space and Kate's vocals seem to be even more astonishing than I can remember.
|
albert 31st Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumKate Bush - The Dreaming (2018) | Sound quality is much improved in my opinion, not quite as abrasive, now with defined clarity and space, excellent job.
There are discussions on other websites as to whether Rolf Harris' minor contribution has been replaced or just his credit removed. Any thoughts?

albert 31st Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumKate Bush - Lionheart (2018) | The packaging tries to recreate the original UK version with a gatefold cover and embossed text, it does not replicate the original plain yellow inner sleeve. The artwork has been reworked, and photoshopped, on the back sleeve the colours are slightly more vibrant and Kate's flesh tones look better, however the hair on the top of her head has been reworked to make it look less wild but its a rushed job. The front cover loses the deep shadows of the original and some of the detail by making the whole image brighter, again I feel this is sloppy work.
|
albert 31st Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumKate Bush - The Kick Inside (2018) | I am disappointed with this pressing because of the presence of sibilance on some of Kate's high notes, this is the first time I played the vinyl, and it was brand new from the sealed box set. Immediately afterwards I played my original UK pressing and there is no such problem on that version.
The packaging tries to recreate the original UK version and has a high gloss finished cover, the original was laminated. The artwork has been slightly reworked, and photoshopped, colours might be slightly more vibrant but details have been lost (check the dragon on Kate's kite). The lyrics on the rear are whiter and easier to read, the song titles have different spacing.
I've just noticed that on the front cover of many original worldwide pressings the thin black border before the brown border is missing.

albert 7th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Stupid Set - Soul Of Trade (2015) | Despite the order of the tracks given on the cover I cannot say for certain if it is correct.
The labels list the tracks in a pie chart format, timings are not indicated, instead it gives you percentages. This in itself is a bit annoying but for the wackiness factor some people might think it is a cool idea. Unfortunately mixed between the proper tracks are what they call 'scrambler tracks', which is basically them just messing around with tv & radio samples/ambient noise/studio noodling, and to make things worse there are no gaps between, so everything just merges and overlaps, one segment into the next.
Its not easy listening to the LP as the 'scrambler tracks' get irritating, but even so I endured it, however judging by the lyrics I think that a couple of tracks are on the other side to the side that they are supposed to be on. So in the end I just gave up.

albert 7th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumDevo - Miracle Witness Hour (2015) | Several coloured vinyl pressings exist, mine is white vinyl identified by the sticker which reads "ULTIMATE VIRGIN Coloured Vinyl".
Other pressings include one in red translucent vinyl with glitter - which is best avoided since the glitter adds surface noise like a bad case of dust in the grooves (this appropriately named HOT DUST on the sticker).

albert 7th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Girls [Boston] - Girls Reunion (1986) | "The Girls" sticker is in dayglo orange but the scanner had difficulty capturing the colour. The other sticker is a random one, it will be different for each LP, the stickers are on the shrink-wrapping so secondhand LPs may have lost them.
Here is the full LP:

albert 5th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumMy Bloody Valentine - This Is Your Bloody Valentine (1985) | My Bloody Valentine when they had just began, and sounding quite psychobilly in a Cramps/Birthday Party kind of style. Not a terrible start, but don't expect MBV of the Creation era.
I uploaded scans of the Dossier later pressing, I have to say that the popsike picture looks very suspect, note: all of MBV's rarities have been pirated/bootlegged.
|
albert 5th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumMy Bloody Valentine - Ecstasy And Wine (1989) | Added some scans of a genuine original Lazy Records pressing. Warning: if you own a pirate copy you may get a bit upset on these notes which describe how to spot a pirate visually.
My scanner cannot capture the whole image so these are composites, however there are only a couple of tiny slithers of information missing on both images, and these are missing on the right side of the top-right corner, and on the left side of the bottom-left corner.
Now inspect the images carefully, you will see that on a pirate copy the image is duller and slightly more blurred, the image has also been zoomed on the pirate so a few millimetres of image are lost around the entire perimeter. The spine has the text in a different font and the positioning is different. The original is pressed by MPO and has hand-written matrix numbers (unfortunately easy for pirates to copy).
If you play a pirated copy and then play the genuine original record you will notice a great difference in sound quality.

albert 10th Feb 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumMy Bloody Valentine - Ecstasy And Wine (1989) | Like all of MBV's rare records this one has been pirated, and frankly the pirated version sounds bloody awful, so be careful if you are offered one for sale. Pirated copies have a slightly 'out of focus' cover and several other indicators, I will add some notes and images later.

albert 14th Jan 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967) | I really wouldn't call it a repress being that it probably hadn't gone out of print, but seems like discogs do. The difference is just that "File Under Popular: Pop Groups" text has been added to the back of the sleeve, though it would be nice to learn the exact date when that text became obligatory....
hmmm, just having a closer look at that discogs one and comparing it with my copy....
Well there are more differences with my copy, discogs shows a grey back cover, mine is white, discogs show different text at the bottom right "To play this STEREO record on a....", mine states "This Mono record has been...." (with obvious sloppy work). Both discogs copy and my one have the "file under pop" text on the top right, but my copy also has "stereo" underneath the catalogue number.
EDIT: I think my stereo copy might have had covers switched, discogs lists a back white sleeve example as being from 1969. I reckon this probably happened through mis-information by Record Collector magazine, I have had a few copies pass through my hands and it is likely that I held onto one that Record Collector advised as being 'first issue'.

albert 2nd Jan 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Timeless II . . . A Continuation (1982) | fun quotes from their ad placed in Record Collector 44, page 12:
"this colourful and elegant picture disc...will blow your mind..."
"...never before has there been a more spaced-out and far-out Beatles album..."
"...we are certain that this Beatles picture disc album will become the most important record that you will ever own"

albert 1st Jan 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumJimi Hendrix - Midnight Lightning (1975) | More scraping of the barrel here. These are tracks which Alan Douglas mostly patched up with 'newly recorded instrumental parts by session musicians', allegedly, even Mitch Mitchell's song has his drum parts replaced by a session drummer.

albert 15th Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumKraftwerk - Autobahn (1974) | Vertigo did some great work replacing the designs of Kraftwerk's covers, compare them to the German originals. Early pressings of the LP have a slightly embossed cover, by the way.
When I had access to a fabric printer, Autobahn was one image I made into a cushion cover, other classic sleeves included Trout Mask Replica, Never Mind the Bollocks, Piper at the Gates Of Dawn, and the first Raincoats LP.
