Bill Fick 25th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJeanne Hayes, Mike Russo, The Dellwoods - Fink Along With Mad (1963) | Yeah, "It's A Gas" too...
Bill Fick 24th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHank Locklin - A Tribute To Roy Acuff, King Of Country Music (1962) | Yep. Give him a cigarette/cigar & he'll look even more like him.
Bill Fick 23rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison (1968) | Had an opportunity once to pick up a clean mono copy of this. It came down to choosing between this or a clean copy of "Eddie Cochran" (Liberty LRP-3172) with the textured front cover. I chose the Cochran LP. Still wondering if I made the right choice.
Bill Fick 23rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - American Recordings (1994) | Saw him in concert on Mother's Day '94 in Merrillville, IN. He performed most of this (then brand-new) album during the show. Excellent. Went out & bought it the next day.
Bill Fick 23rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - At San Quentin (1971) | Boy, you still learn something new every day. Even though I'm a life-long major Cash fan/collector, I never knew this LP was released in Quadrophonic. Got a few Quad LP's in my collection, but never heard a live one before...
Bill Fick 23rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Hello, I'm Johnny Cash (1970) | Cash's 1st studio LP with Bob Wooten on lead guitar, who joined The Tennessee Three after Luther Perkins' passing in 1968.
Bill Fick 23rd Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - The Holy Land (1969) | 1st pressing of this had a 3-D photo on the front cover.
Bill Fick 20th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Biggest Hits Of '56, Vol. 1 (1956) | There must be more than one cover for this. Mine has a blue cover, similar in layout to "The Biggest Hits Of 1955" LP, CAL-294...
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Once Upon A Time (1969) | Recorded live at the Sahara Tahoe, June 1-22, 1966. Both Capitol & Decca declined to release it, wasn't released until June, 1969.
Tracks B1, B4, D2 & D6 are not actual songs, but between-song bantering by John Stewart.
There's been a CD released called "Twice Upon A Time", containing previously unreleased additional recordings from these shows.
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Best Of The Kingston Trio Volume #3 (1975) | It is also a re-issue cover, due to the target label logo on both front & back.
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Hidden Treasures (1986) | All tracks on this release are non-LP or originally unreleased Capitol-era recordings.
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Back In Town (1964) | A lot of people slam this LP, mainly because there are no new John Stewart compositions on it, but I've always thought of it fondly as a live LP (not counting this version of "Tom Dooley", since by this time, 1964, the Trio had been performing it in virtually every live performance since 1958 & were sick of it)...
He's uncredited on the original LP, but Glen Campbell plays 12-string guitar on these performances.
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Make Way (1961) | Some good songs on here, but still one of the original Trio's weakest LP's.
Bill Fick 17th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - The Last Month Of The Year (1960) | Mono version is T-1446. I have a copy of each. Exquisite LP, excellent for anyone who wants a little more depth & introspection to their Christmas music. Still a tradition in my house every year.
Re-issued on CD in the '90s & almost immediately deleted. Hard to find, but worth the effort.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - String Along (1960) | IMO, this is the Trio's best studio LP. To give you an idea of just how popular these guys were in their prime, there was a point in 1959 where they had 5 (count 'em, FIVE!) LP's in the US Top Ten all at the same time. No one's ever done that, before or since. Not Elvis, not The Beatles, no one.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Something Special (1962) | Most Trio fans (myself included) didn't like this LP due to the overdubs. This entire album was released on CD in 2013 (minus all the Jimmie Haskell orchestral overdubs)
as "Something REALLY Special" by Rediscover Music, liner notes & session info compiled by my friend, Dave Samuelson.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDave Guard And The Whiskeyhill Singers - Dave Guard And The Whiskeyhill Singers (1962) | Dave Guard's 1st LP after leaving The Kingston Trio. A follow-up LP was recorded but not released. Shortly afterwards, Dave emigrated to Australia. David 'Buck' Wheat (on the far left) was The Kingston Trio's original bassist.
Also released in mono as T-1728.
The Kingston Trio (with Dave) also recorded Track B3, but was left unreleased until the CD era.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Close-Up (1961) | 1st release with Dave Guard's replacement, John Stewart. Earliest pressings of this LP have a number of typos in the song titles on the back cover.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Sing A Song With The Kingston Trio (1963) | Looks like John to me, just an odd angle.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kingston Trio - Here We Go Again! (1959) | Vast differences between the mono & stereo mixes of this LP, especially Track B3.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - The Great Performances (1990) | Notable for being the 1st commercial release of his 1st acetate recording, "My Happiness", from the summer of 1953.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - The Songs And Comedy Of The Smothers Brothers At The Purple Onion (1961) | Although they're noted for never doing a song straight (or even finishing one) in live performance, they did so more often in their earlier years. Tracks A3, B2 & B4 are all done straight.
Their version of "Maria" is my favorite version, even more so than The Kingston Trio's.
They did do proper studio recordings, but their live renditions performed straight were always better, without David Carrol's (sometimes) fruity orchestrations.
Overshadowed by both their comedy & their TV show, both Tom & Dick are very under-rated as musicians & vocalists.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - Curb Your Tongue, Knave! (1963) | 1st pressing on the black label. I have the mono version of this. IMO, this is their best live album. In my home, we still play Track B4 every Christmas.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - Think Ethnic (1963) | 1st pressing is on the black label.
Bill Fick 15th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - NBC's Saturday Night Live (1976) | Their 40th Anniversary show is on NBC tonight.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumShel Silverstein - "A Boy Named Sue" And His Other Country Songs (1969) | A perfect example of where the songwriter's version of a song is not necessarily the definitive version, in this case, Track B1.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDick Orkin, Jane Roberts And Jim Runyon - The Best Of Chickenman (1967) | I believe there is a foreign pressing (UK perhaps) that has an additional track at the end of Side 2.
Bill Fick 14th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Smothers Brothers - The Songs And Comedy Of The Smothers Brothers At The Purple Onion (1961) | 1st pressings were on the black label
Bill Fick 10th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - The Best Of Top Of The Pops 1984 (1984) | Ah, Sam...(sigh)... Back then, I'd have drunk her bath water...
Bill Fick 10th Feb 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumDee Dee Sharp - It's Mashed Potato Time (1962) | Quite common for the time. I have post-1960 Roulette releases with a 1958 copyright date on the labels, & post-'64 Parkway releases with a 1962 copyright date on them.
It goes the other way around, too. I have a re-pressing of The Contours' "Do You Love Me" with a copyright date of 1966 on it!
