Cream - Wheels Of Fire (1968)
There's a later pressing with the original catalogue numbers plus an added set number of 2612 001. The Studio album has Record 1 added to the label.

Review
This turns out to be a re-issue of a 1968 dated compilation which was, presumably issued in its rightful mono only. The lack of Sold In UK .... info suggests the latter half of 1969.

Many excellent tracks on this album that have been spoiled by the reprocessed stereo method that sounds even worse when compressed into mono. This probably explains why it sold cheaply!

Best avoided in favour of the true mono original.

The Judge- Sounds identical to my copy. Same labels too of course. Mine was purchased new in mid 1977.

Just noticed my 1977 purchased copy has the matrix CDS4006//A2 on side one, both stamped and handwritten. Side 2 is CDS4006//A6 stamped plus CDS4006-B-RE-1 written and a crossed out SD 36-147 B REI, which is the US Atco catalogue number.

Various Artists - Rare Tracks (1975)
Very few compilations could be called, "Perfect", but this comes close to that. Full marks for resisting the temptation to reprocess the mono tracks into "Stereo".

Tracks A2, A3, B5 and B6 are stereo. The remainder rightly presented in their original and proper mono, including the Fairport Convention gem that's incorrectly credited as being stereo on the label.

I wasn't aware of this compilation's existence until a few days ago. A must have for any collection.

Jethro Tull - Benefit (1974)
I used to have an earlier version of this re-issue. The labels were similar to those uploaded on the Living In The Past double set. No All Rights.... statement and no mention of Island Records. Cut and pressed by EMI.

My copy looks to be a Philips pressing and has Philips style matrix numbers.
The first images are clearly Orlake. Can anyone confirm if this has Orlake or Philips matrixes?

Fascinating to see them adapting the UK mono catalogue number for this stereo release!

Yes indeed James. I purchased this album on my 12th birthday at the end of October 1977. I was, of course already familiar with the three tracks that were issued as singles.

The Motors - Approved By The Motors (1978)
Thanks for the correction and the interesting additional info James. I guess I'd heard the later singles before I first heard the album. You Beat The Hell Outta Me however is the same recording as the 45, but with echoed lead vocal that was, oddly enough, present on the A-side Be What You Gotta Be, but not the original B-side. It's a much better mix on the original 45. A check by combining both single and album versions resulted in phasing, confirming they are actually the same recording.

That's fascinating to learn the re-issue LP came out in November 1978. I wondered why it bared the new Virgin logo on the sleeve, yet the album labels are the older style blue ones. I can only guess they had plenty of the special stamped labels to use up.

The Motors - Approved By The Motors (1978)
I remember Sounds disliking this album. In retrospect they were right seeing four of the tracks were previously available as singles and are the best tracks on the album. Virgin issued a fifth number "Today" towards the end of 1978. Having said that, the Sensation re-write Breathless and Dreaming Your Life Away are outstanding numbers.

Virgin withdrew the original release, re-issued it with a new cover and on red vinyl. Rumour has it it was remixed. Certainly the re-issue sounds warmer and less "raw" but could be my imagination. I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than the original release.

The original issue has A1 and B1 matrixes. The red vinyl issue I have has A2 and B3 ones.

Actually, I was disappointed with the album, not because it wasn't very good, but its best tracks had already been issued as singles.

With respect and a nod to BandBox244 I've uploaded images from my own copy. Traditionally PYE utilised mono sleeves for stereo records with a sticker giving the stereo information. This is missing from my copy with evidence it might have once existed.

The Easybeats - The Easybeats (1969)
My earlier comments would appear to be incorrect. Despite the sleeve giving a mono catalogue number it would appear this album was granted a stereo only release, unless others know otherwise.

Surprising my copy has handwritten rather than the usual stamped matrix numbers. It looks genuine with the indented ring as seen on the image of the stereo copy. Matrix on both sides: 3G

The Beatles - Rubber Soul (1965)
Would appear to be one of the last albums to feature different mono and stereo catalogue numbers.
The 7000 system commenced soon afterwards with both mono and stereo releases having the same catalogue number.
