Various Artists - Historic Series (1964)
Disc title on container: An Introduction to the Historic Series (Eine Einführung in die Telefunken Serie Historische Aufnahmen).

The Joseph Schmidt track is outstanding, an early recording by the doomed tenor (d. 1942). It's a sweet operetta excerpt, usually sung by a soprano, but he captures the yearning melody in an unforgettable manner.

Note the spelling variation for tenor Helge Rosvaenge (usually spelled Roswaenge or Roswænge).

This is a sampler LP compiled from other releases.

Marlene Dietrich - Wiedersehen Mit Marlene (1962)
Parallel track titles also in English on container:

A1 Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss auf Liebe eingestellt (Falling in Love Again) (From "The Blue Angel")
A2 Ich bin die fesche Lola (I'm Naughty Little Lola) (From "The Blue Angel")
A3 Wer wird denn weinen (Who'd Want to Cry)
A4 Mein blondes Baby (My Blond Baby)
A5 Peter
A6 Allein in einer grossen Stadt (Alone)

B1 Wenn ich mir 'was wünschen dürfte (If I Could Wish For Something)
B2 Johnny, wenn du Geburtstag hast (Johnny, When It's Your Birthday)
B3 Marie-Marie
B4 Lili Marlen
B5 Ich weiss nicht, zu wem ich gehöre (I Don't Know Whom I Belong To)
B6 Ich hab' noch einen Koffer in Berlin (I Still Have A Trunk In Berlin)

This live recording from her 1960s tour of Germany is fun, moving, sad, nostalgic. A wonderful album.

The songwriter shown on label as Holländer/Hollaender is Friedrich Holländer (1896-1976).

Interesting to note the presentation of Marlene Dietrich's name here. A literal transcription of the wording on the label would result in the recording being entered under "Marlene" or "Marlene the great Dietrich." The liner notes make it clear she is known as "Marlene Dietrich," and she is so widely known that it seems absurd to enter this disc under any other form of name.

Issued also in stereo: DT 10282.

Liane - The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) (1956)

This German language ballad opera was written in 1928, revived in New York in 1954. Some of the music became especially popular in the 1950s- Bobby Darin reached Billboard #1 with Mack the Knife in 1959; several instrumental discs charted, including Dick Hyman's Moritat (A Theme from The Three Penny Opera) in 1956. While the original opera has spare and bleak qualities, the popular hit versions are far happier, or wistful and sentimental. For fans of Liane Augustin, this album will represent a radical, perhaps disappointing, departure from her usual sentimental songs. Also notable is the appearance of Helge Roswænge, a famous operatic tenor from decades earlier appearing here in a very different kind of music.
