LaurenceD SUBS 16th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumMary Lou Williams - Mary Lou Williams (1964) | The album included a 4-page insert, which is missing from my copy.
Also pressed with Folkways labels, using the same cat no.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Four Brothers [jazz] - Together Again! (1957) | These were Serge Chaloff's last recording sessions. He died July 16, 1957.
Something went wrong with the track title designations on the cover and labels. From the songs that I'm able to identify by listening, those titles line up with the tracks on the opposite sides of the album. The matrix numbers on the labels match those on their respective sides.

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLoretta Lynn - Your Squaw Is On The Warpath (1969) | You're right, Ed, that song was built around the melody of a cigarette jingle ("You can take Salem out of the country, but ..." became "You can take Barney out of the barroom, but ..."), and had to be removed because of copyright issues. Which is too bad because the song fit in nicely with the "squaw on the warpath" theme.

LaurenceD SUBS 29th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumPaul Revere And The Raiders - Spirit Of '67 (1969) | Another set of labels, similar to those from checkm8, but with added "GP 12".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumFifth Flight - Into Smoke Tree Village | Various sites date this at 1970; I cannot confirm that date, but the choice of cover songs would point in that direction.
I don't understand the high prices attributed to this LP. It's possibly because of various commercial websites declaring this as a "psych classic" because it features some fuzz guitar here and there. But honestly, these guys sound comparable to some high school dance bands that I heard back in 1968. It's fun to listen to, but don't spend too much money on a copy.

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Omega Orchestra, Heinz Sandauer - Destination Moon (1958) | Leith Stevens' soundtrack was originally released by Columbia in 1950. This is a later recording.

LaurenceD SUBS 24th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElton Britt - Beyond The Sunset (1960) | [YouTube Video]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBarnaby Conrad - The Day Manolete Was Killed (1957) | After listening to this, it sure sounds like the LP (or the TV program that preceded it) was the inspiration for the b-side of this Flo & Eddie single.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kirby Stone Four - The Kirby Stone Touch (1959) | This entry is for the original stereo release, although my scans are from a later pressing with
- standard Columbia labels from around 1962
- added text on the back cover:
Special Re-issue
Columbia Special Products
Not For Re-sale
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1976) | Added label & disc scans from a yellow vinyl copy. Unfortunately I cannot provide images for the first disc, as my copy contains two of the second disc!
|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJane Powell, Cliff Robertson, Keith Andes, Kaye Ballard, Tommy Noonan - From The Soundtrack Of The RKO Radio Picture: The Girl Most Likely (1958) | This soundtrack was originally planned as an RKO-Unique release for early 1957, but it was shelved when the film release was delayed. Somehow it turned up on Capitol in 1958.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumEarl Bostic - Alto Magic In Hi-Fi (1958) | Added back cover and alternate label images. The main difference in my labels { 3105014, 3105015 } are the matrix numbers; but the runouts show the opposite numbers, e.g. for side 1, label = K12-195, runout = K12-196.
So as it works out for my copy, the sides as played correspond to the label titles (but not the cover titles).
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLale Andersen - Direct From Germany (1962) | Tracks A7 and B7 were released on King single 45-5478. Each of those tracks on the LP and single has an added spoken bit in English by a male voice during the instrumental intro. For example on A7:
"Dame Lale, twilight and I'll be with you.
We'll take that walk to our favorite cafe.
You know, you're quite a girl."

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJoe Hinton - Funny (How The Time Slips Away) (1974) | All tracks sound like mono (not reprocessed stereo) to me.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Ikettes - Soul The Hits (1966) | I have listed the tracks as shown on the cover and labels. However the actual playing order of tracks is as follows:

A3 / Camel Walk
A4 / Can't Sit Down
A5 / Lonely For You
A6 / Not That I Recall
B1 / Peaches 'n Cream
B2 / Sally Go Round The Roses
B3 / Don't Feel Sorry For Me

In the notes Woody refers to the band as The Third Herd.

LaurenceD SUBS 25th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Tennessee (1962) | Sorry about the masking tape - I tried, but it was stubborn ...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - New Orleans: Our Home Town (1964) | A1 artist credit on label: Fats Domnio :-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThee Midniters - Thee Midniters (1965) | Added scans for cover back and labels. Regarding the CH-666 number on the labels, I wonder if somebody made a mistake when doing the layout - that happens to be the same cat# for their "Land Of A Thousand Dances" single: CH-666
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumWillie Tidwell - Willie Tidwell | Willie Tidwell (a band, not an individual) was one of the first bands to bring punk rock to the Salt Lake City club scene. They played frequently at The Roxy (248 S. Main).
Here are some recollections from band member Henry Reese, from a 1989 issue of SLUG magazine: slugmag 6/89
I don't have a precise date for this record release (their only one I think), but based on Reese's comments it would seem to be from 1978 or 1979. Also I don't know if it had a cover - my copy is in a plain 10" sleeve. There seems to be very little information about this release on the 'net.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumWardell Gray - Way Out Wardell (1957) | All tracks were originally released on Modern 10" 78s, split across two sides as the titles indicate. Correct recording date info (from jazzdisco.org):
- February 27, 1947:
-- Sweet Georgia Brown (as Sweet Georgia Bop/Sweet Georgia Brown)
-- Just You, Just Me (as Just Bop)
- April 29, 1947:
-- Blue Lou; One O'Clock Jump
- Summer 1949:

LaurenceD SUBS 31st Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Top 10 Hits Original Artists (1964) | All tracks are 'rechanneled' stereo
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBlues Magoos - Psychedelic Lollipop (1966) | I have a copy with the same cover and labels as shown here, but it's actually a stereo pressing with runouts: [ 2/61096 A 1 / 2/61096 B 1 ]. Apparently a number of these are known to exist, see here. So if you have a mono copy, you might want to check it.
BTW mine is stamped "promotional copy / not for sale" and was given to station WSCR.

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumTito Puente - Top Percussion (1958) | Posted cleaner cover scans as suggested by Upsetter FC
|
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - 21 By Ad-Staff, Inc. | Ad-Staff was formed in 1957.
No composer credits per track are given, but after looking up some copyright info I can confirm that most of them have lyrics by Don Quinn and Martin Sperzel and music by Henry Russell.
Also based on those copyright dates, the tracks are presented in roughly chronological order, starting in 1957 (beer) and ending in 1959 (Pacific Airlines, Dodge Trucks).
They are very catchy advertisements; these guys knew what they were doing.
Martin Sperzel went on to write other notable jingles, see here
