the whistler 23rd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumFairport Convention - The History Of Fairport Convention (1972) | Not sure what to do with my version-has red ribbon and ICD4 on spine, yet cat no on labels is the same. Furthermore side2 has different publisher credits. (Posted above) Matrices are: ICD1 4 A-4U/B-3U with 'Porky' and ICD 2 A-2U/B-3U with 'Pecko'. So must be later version. Do you want rest of scans here?

|
the whistler 23rd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumCowboy Junkies - Black Eyed Man (1992) | ReviewThis album followed 'Caution Horses' which had a haunted breathlessness and set the standard pretty high. So this is the classic case of how to follow up a critical and artistic success. The first 4 tracks are a natural progression from the previous platter-there is a more electric feel but the tales of regret, hidden terrors and dreams of escape persist. The lyrics are superb (This life holds it's secrets, like a seashell holds the sea) (woman on the porches comparing alilbis) and the melodies are growers.
Then we have the classic carcrash when two artists that you admire collaborate and the result falls between two stools. John Prine is the culprit here, the song (If You were the Woman) doesn't suit his voice and it just drags. This is followed by a clumsy attempt to be Neil Young with loud guitars and obvious words.
The B-side is similar-the originals are generally very good, but the song especially written for the band by Townes van Zandt just doesn't fly-it flops.Final cover is absolutely brilliant and the pros outweigh the cons overall. Also nice to have a bit of 90's vinyl when it was basically being dropped by the majors. And yes Margo Timmins is photogenic as well as a top-notch singer. Conclusion-it stays.

|
the whistler 22nd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumCowboy Junkies - The Caution Horses (1990) | ReviewThis is not an everyday album. The combination of piecing lyrics, melancholy melodies and the majesty of Margo Timmins' voice make it perfect for a quiet winter evening or wet Sunday afternoon. The songs are about heartbreak, people hitting rock bottom or a turning point in their lives. We get a beefy bass sound, lots of eerie slide, mandolin and a fantastic accordion embellishment. Despite the gloom and discontent, paradoxically this album is strangely uplifting. Also found it was great for rocking babies to sleep. Once again there is not a song to be skipped, but each tune needs to be savoured on a decent set of headphones.

the whistler 21st Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumRoy Harper - Valentine (1974) | Even as a fan of RH you have to question 'Forbidden Fruit'. Being charitable, it is badly judged and from the past (they do things differently there) or it is a fairly graphic description of sex with a 13 year old girl, or, as the law would have it, rape. An 'inconvenient truth'.

the whistler 16th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane (1988) | ReviewThis is one of those rare albums-no track that you have to skip-in fact every song is a grower. Acoustic indie/pop with a dream like feel. Lyrics are mini-stories and snapshots rooted in the reality of relationships and heartbreak. This is literate music for those who like a good tune and a wry outlook. I find their earlier stuff quite hard to listen to, the band are unusual in that they got better and better and ended with this (then re-convened in the 90s). The more ballady stuff (Quiet Heart say) is sweet but not sugary, the tunes with a bit more muscle (Was there anything for example) are propelled along by a pulsing rhythm with traditional drums, guitars and bass. There are lovely little touches like snatches of oboe and violin. The whole thing is a delightful, thoughtful concoction that is not to be missed.

Met a guy called Colin Harper and swapped tents-cos he was with his (rather nice) girlfriend and my tent was a bit bigger. He is now a respected music journalist-but we lost touch years ago. The strap on my t-shirt was holding Colin's tape recorder as he had gone to the loo or bar-still have a battered copy of the tape somewhere! Every picture.....
Album was recorded 'live' in the studio and audience added later. Bit cheeky.

the whistler 17th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl Album10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe (1987) | ReviewHeadline: Literate, liberal and lingers long in the mind.
The music is based on twisting guitar patterns in a sort of Byrds/Smiths hybrid. Production is clear and avoids an obvious 80s template. Two elements stand out vividly-Natalie Merchant's vocal delivery and the non-mainstream subject matter. Natalie's voice is very natural- no effects needed-and much admired. It is her words though that are intriguing. We get a debate on smacking children, adult illiteracy, failure to get out of bed and a comment on greed.
Highlights include Don't Talk (which touches on alcohol abuse), Sister Rose (the best song about a wedding that I can think of-with a little sly ending) and Verdi Cries-the solo end track that is a thing of breathless beauty. Only dud is the cover of Cat Stevens' Peace Train-seems completely un-necessary and was, of course, chosen as a single.
Natalie has received some attacks over the years for being a bit preachy and she wears her liberal-heart on her sleeve. Later recordings were less schoolteachery, but this is still a top album.
Will grow and grow on you if given a chance.

the whistler 10th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl Album10,000 Maniacs - Our Time In Eden (1992) | ReviewHeadline: literate, well-arranged thoughtful pop-indie.
If you like jangly pop-indie-folk-this album is perfect for you. Natalie Merchant has a voice that grabs your attention and lyrics that tell stories, evoke characters and are open to interpretation. The production is top quality and hasn't dated-alongside traditional drum/bass/keys/guitar (all played with confidence and cohesion), we have the graceful application of strings and joyful horns to boot.
Subjects covered include being blessed by a happy day, relationship breakups, lost childhood, the fate of women who set off to the Frontier during the Gold Rush, tolerance and the hanging of an innocent victim. Something for everyone.
Repeated plays just bring out more subtleties as words and melodies soak in and there isn't a track that you always have to skip.
Thoroughly recommended.
