W.B.lbl 23rd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Gunn, Don Ralke - Introspection IV (1960) | Looks like this was test pressed by Research Craft, with lacquers cut by Radio Recorders in Hollywood.
W.B.lbl 22nd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Spinners [UK] - Live Performance (1972) | It is from 1971. It was on the UK albums chart in the summer.
W.B.lbl 22nd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumHarry Secombe - If I Ruled The World (1971) | This was on the UK albums charts in the summer of 1971. Take that what you will.
W.B.lbl 22nd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - Top Of The Pops: Vol. 18 (1971) | The lass on the cover looks almost like Cheryl (Cherri) Gilham.
W.B.lbl 13th Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumJim Reeves - Moonlight And Roses (1964) | This copy's images should be placed in the proper entry, as it's Australian. [mod: now in the right place]
W.B.lbl 6th Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumSergio Mendes And Brasil '66 - Stillness (1970) | {Images #3638903 & 3638904} is a Columbia Terre Haute pressings; over here can be seen the Pitman.
W.B.lbl 5th Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumFrankie Carle, His Piano And Orchestra - 30 Hits Of The Thundering '30s (1963) | That label is of the U.S. issue, this it should be re-flagged as 'USA'.
W.B.lbl 4th Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Oklahoma! Motion Picture Sound Track (1955) | The original U.S. mono issue was SAO-595. LCT 6100 was the UK release. First-copies were on a red label as seen here.
W.B.lbl 24th Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Great Hits From Stage And Screen: Volume 2 | This looks like it was around 1969.
W.B.lbl 23rd Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumOlivia Newton-John - If You Love Me, Let Me Know (1974) | {Images #3534981 & 3534983} was an RCA club edition, pressed in Indianapolis. Copies also exist of Capitol Record Club copies (cat. # SWAO-95768). Have yet to see a Columbia Record Club pressing (with Pitman type, natch').
W.B.lbl 19th Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumPeter Frampton - Wind Of Change (1972) | From Terre Haute. Here's the ochre-label Pitman variant.
W.B.lbl 10th Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBrook Benton - Brook Benton Today (1970) | There is also a Columbia Pitman type variant, seen here.
W.B.lbl 9th Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumDick Dale And His Del-Tones - Surfer's Choice (1963) | The summer camp I stayed in once had a copy of the Scranton {Images #2285677 & 2285678} of this LP.
W.B.lbl 3rd Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Doors - Strange Days (1967) | And, we are seeing this again, this time with RCA Smiths Falls-pressed {Images #3608478 & 3608479}.
W.B.lbl 3rd Jul 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumEnoch Light - 4 Channel Demonstration (1971) | {Images #3607788 & 3607789} with the Columbia Pitman type looks like it was pressed after 1973 or thereabouts; the "Inc." in the music publishing credits give that away. (Before early 1972, the 'c' was closer to the period than to the 'n'.)
W.B.lbl 24th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumOriginal Cast Of Star Wars With Naration By Roscoe Lee Browne - The Story Of Star Wars | This would have been an early 1980's reissue; the original, of course, was 20th Century (-Fox) T-550 (which I once had on cassette as 1T1 6747). I still remember James Earl Jones' voice seemingly enunciating "rebel spies" as "rubble shpies."
W.B.lbl 14th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumRoy Clark - Yesterday, When I Was Young (1969) | Let me guess: the newly added {Images #3593961 & 3593962} is a Santa Maria pressing?
W.B.lbl 14th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumSteppenwolf - Early Steppenwolf (1969) | I still think Columbia Pitman's {Images #1354719 & 1354721} was better laid out than Santa Maria's {Images #3594185 & 3594186}.
W.B.lbl 14th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumSpiro T. Agnew - Spiro T. Agnew Speaks Out (1970) | Matrix code:
Z = 1970
1 (mistyped as 'I' on label) = Custom - Transcription
R = 12" - 33⅓ RPM
M = Mono - Fine
W.B.lbl 14th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Establishment (The Original London Company) - Peter Cook Presents The Establishment (1963) | I have to wonder if Haber Typographers in New York typeset the album cover, especially the back with Akzidenz-Grotesk with Bold. They sure did for Columbia in this period.
Also, wasn't this one of the last "Bill Grauer Productions"-issued Riversides before his death and the label going to Orpheum Productions?
W.B.lbl 8th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBob Dylan - New Morning (1970) | {Images #3588029 & 3588030} is Terre Haute. Thus two of the three variants (that, and my Pitman {Images #458286 & 458287} have been accounted for.
W.B.lbl 6th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - URGH! A Music War (1981) | Practically the only U.S. release to feature anything by Toyah. (None of her UK albums or singles were issued in the States.)
W.B.lbl 5th Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Swingle Singers, New York Philharmonic, Luciano Berio - Berio: Sinfonia (1969) | Those were two different acts - technically it should be The Swingle Singers, New York Philharmonic, Luciano Berio (as he also conducted).
Moreover, this was first on Columbia Masterworks.
W.B.lbl 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumTommy Roe - Dizzy (1969) | A variant also exists with Columbia Pitman label fonts.
W.B.lbl 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumRufus Thomas - Do The Funky Chicken (1970) | The new {Images #3580920 & 3580921} is a Columbia Terre Haute variant; naturally, the Pitman layout {Images #1711354 & 1711356} is much neater and more organized.
W.B.lbl 30th May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumNat King Cole - Unforgettable (1954) | I know "Wiki" said 1954, but the 'T' series bowed in 1955 per the Jan. 8, 1955 issue of Billboard. Take that what you will.
W.B.lbl 29th May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumKay Starr - The Kay Starr Style (1955) | That would have been for the original 10" release (H-363). It was extended to the 12 tracks (and 12" format) here in 1955, upon the inauguration of the 'T' series. Billboard announced such debut (retailing initially at $3.98) in its Jan. 8, 1955 issue. {Images #1211247 & 1211248} would have dated to 1957, {Images #1888933 & 1888935} to 1958-59. When first released in this form, the label design would have been as on here.
[Mod: changed to 1955]
W.B.lbl 29th May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumKay Starr - The Kay Starr Style (1953) | Canada?! This is a U.S. release, preceding the 12" issue by about two years (the 'T' release came out at the time that series was inaugurated in 1955). Says 'Made in U.S.A.' on the back cover {Image #3369543}, and mentions 'Capitol Records, Inc. • Hollywood, California • U.S.A.' in the rim print of {Images #3369544 & 3369545}. Doesn't look or sound Canadian to me . . . [Mod: changed to US]
W.B.lbl 28th May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumKenny Loggins With Jim Messina - Sittin' In (1971) | I should note that I have a Pitman copy with Santa Maria metalwork with labels as on {Images #958462 & 958463}. Two characteristics give this away:
- The center hole drilled onto the labels was 7.2mm (0.2835"), rather than Santa Maria's 7.4mm (0.2913")
- The margin diameter (the most raised area of the outer record diameter) was at 299.5mm (11.7913") rather than Santa Maria's then standard of 298mm (11.7323")
As you can guess by these small details, I have more than one way to pinpoint where a copy was pressed - and why looking at photos and scans is in no way the same as seeing a pressing up close and personal. Pitman, at that point, was still using Queens Litho to print their label blanks (presumably Terre Haute as well); the label blanks Santa Maria used came from Bert-Co. Both were using 70 lb. C2S paper which was made by Newton Falls Paper Mill. (Nashua Corp. made the 70 lb. C1S Litho Dry Gum Label paper stock - most likely 25" x 20" - that was used to print label blanks for styrene 45's that the Pitman and Terre Haute plants turned out.)
W.B.lbl 23rd May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBob Dylan - Hard Rain (1976) | Frankly, the Pitman {Images #1838996 & 1838997} is better laid out than Santa Maria's {Images #1122997 & 1123001}.
