Notes Although Milton "Artie Rogers" Rajonsky was born in Great Barrington, MA, he was one of the founders of West Coast Jazz. Mr. Rogers was such a great flugelhorn and trumpet player to the level where he was in high demand for playing such instruments and arranging musical productions. The majority of the music that Mr. Rogers had recorded with Jimmy Giuffre had resulted in an early form of avant-garde jazz, thru which Mr. Rogers had combined jazz compositions with avant-garde art music. In the 1950's, Mr. Rogers had formed the Shorty Rogers and the Giants band. From 1953 to 1962, this group had recorded many albums by means of Atlantic records, such as Shorty Counts The Court, The Swinging Mr. Rogers and Martians Come Back. Though this was not the first disc of the Atlantic 1200 series, from which both 10 inch and 12 inch discs were issued by means of black characters of a yellow label background, this record was the first Atlantic disc of 33.33 rpm that was issued by means of white characters that were of a black label background. This happened because Nesuhi Ertegun had changed these graphics when was put in charge of the development of the Atlantic jazz catalog in the mid-1950s. Furthermore, Mr. Ertegun had eliminated not only all the 100 and 400 series of the 10 inch LPs, but also the early 12 inch albums of the catalog of Atlantic. Shorty Rogers and his Giants were the first band that Atlantic Records, more specifically Nesuhi Ertegun, had issued the recordings of this group by means of the white characters o f a black label background. Finally, the Atlantic 1200 series was the only series that existed until the Atlantic 8000 series issues of discs of 33.33 rpm were first released in April 1957. Images
