Notes

Mabel Mercer was a successful cabaret singer who performed with numerous jazz and cabaret performers in the United States and many European countries. Ms. Mercer was born in Great Britain to a an English Caucasian mother and an African-American father who passed away before Ms. Mercer was born.

Even though Ms. Mercer was an unknown member of the black chorus of the London production of Show Boat, she became a celebrity in Paris with admirers, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Cole Porter.

During the onset of the second world war, Ms. Mercer had traveled to the United States to sing in the elite supper clubs in New York City. Her recording career began with an album of selections of Porgy and Bess by means of the Liberty Music Shops label. Later, Ms. Mercer had secured a recording contract with Atlantic records thru which she cut many studio and live recordings for almost two decades. Though Cole Porter had composed every tune of this LP, both Cy Walter and Stan Freeman had provided accompaniment with Ms. Mercer.

Three years after Ms. Mercer had been honoured by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City in 1981, she had passed away at the age of eighty-four years in Pittsfield, MA.

Finally, this was the second Atlantic disc of 33.33 rpm that was originally issued with white characters of a black label background.
