Notes Due to the fact that Phineas Newborn was born to a family of musicians, he learned to play the piano, trumpet and saxophone at a very early age. Mr. Newborn first played in a musical band that was conducted by his father. Other band members were his brother Calvin, saxophonist Ben Branch, bassist Tuf Green and Willie Mitchell, who became a prosperous strumental recording artist at the Hi recording studio in the 1960s. Furthermore, this band had primarily played at the renowned Plantation Inn Club in West Memphis, Arkansas, from 1947 to 1951. Also, this band had musically backed B.B. King during his first recording session in 1949. After the Newborn band had departed from West Memphis, this band became the renowned Delta Cats, who had backed Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner during the recording session of the tune Rocket 88 in 1951 at the Sun recording studio. After Mr. Newborn had relocated to New York City in 1956, he recorded this disc of 33.33 rpm, which was his first, with his brother Calvin, Kenny Clarke and Oscar Pettiford at the Atlantic recording studio. Eventually, Mr. Newborn recorded at other studios such as RCA, Roulette and Contemporary. Consequently, he had recorded many more tunes that were issued by means of twenty-two different discs of 33.33 rpm throughout the next thirty-two years. Even though Mr. Newborn suffered both physical and mental health issues, he made some minor comebacks in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Finally, Mr. Newborn had passed away the 26 May 1989 after a tumor growth was found on his lungs and was buried in the Memphis National Cemetery. Images Comments and Reviews
