Charles Mingus was a jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader whose compositions had kept the soulful feel of bebop, which is a jazz-style that features tunes that are characterized by a fast tempo, complex chord progressions with rapid chord changes and numerous changes of key and improvisation that is based on harmonic structure.

Due to Mr. Mingus’ brilliant writing for midsize ensembles, and to his empathizing the strengths of his musicians, Mr. Mingus was often considered the heir of Duke Ellington, who Mr. Mingus had greatly revered.

When the Pithecanthropus Erectus disc of 33.33 rpm was issued in 1956, this marked the first time that Mr. Mingus had composed tunes with precise musicians of whom he knew and had improvised. At this point, the band members had consisted of Mel Waldron, Jackie McLean and J.R. Monterose. The title song of this disc is a tone poem that depicts the rise of man from his monkey roots to an later decline.

A few years before Mr. Mingus, had died in 1979, he had suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which was the same disease from which Lou Gehrig had ultimately passed away.
