Notes Milt Jackson was a jazz vibraphonist who was primarily known for performing swinging solos while he was a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. However, Mr. Jackson started to play the guitar, then the piano during his preadolescent years. While Mr. Jackson was an adolescent, he played the drums and the violin, and had begun to professionally sing in a gospel quartet known as the Evangelistic Singers. Also, Mr. Jackson was very enthusiastic at playing the twelve-bar blues at a lower speed than was Lionel Hampton. When Dizzy Gillespie heard Mr. Jackson play the vibraphone so well, he had hired Mr. Jackson to play in his band. Due to the jazz experience that Mr. Jackson had gained when he had performed with Woody Herman, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, he had formed his own group, which ultimately became The Modern Jazz Quartet with pianist John Lewis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke, who were former members of the Dizzy Gillespie band. Although Mr. Jackson had recorded at various recording studios and had discs issued by means of diverse record labels that primarily focused on jazz music, his first disc of 33.33 rpm that Atlantic records had issued was this (Atlantic 1242), plus, Atlantic had issued several more discs of Mr. Jackson over the following five years. Finally, Mr. Jackson had continued to be a strong influence from which many young musicians ultimately became professional jazz artists until he had passed away in 1999 at the age of 76 years. Images
