Notes

Lars Gullin was a Swedish jazz saxophonist who learned to play the accordion at a young age. During Mr. Gullin’s first year of adolescence, he sounded the clarinet in an armed forces band, but later had learned to play the alto saxophone. After Mr. Gullin had relocated to Stockholm six years later, he became a professional pianist who wanted to privately study classical music with renowned pianist Sven Brandel. Instead Mr. Gullin had played the baritone saxophone in Seymour Osterwell’s band due to the fact that he believed that he had more money-making opportunities to become a professional saxophonist as opposed to a classical pianist.

After Mr. Gullin had begun to record with American musicians James Moody, Zoot Sims and Clifford Brown, he had first performed with a United States native named Lee Konitz with whom Mr. Gullin had collaborated many more times throughout the next two decades. Even though Mr. Gullin had established his own musical group, this group did not last long due to the fact that he had caused the group members to be involved in an auto collision.

Despite the auto incident, Mr. Gullin had managed to record tunes by means of two sessions in a Stockholm recording studio in 1953 that were first leased and issued by Contemporary Records of Los Angeles. The year following, Mr. Gullin had won the best newcomer award by means of the United States jazz magazine called Down Beat. Accordingly, Mr. Gullin’s 1953 recordings were later leased and issued in the format of this (Atlantic 1246) disc of 33.33 rpm.

Due to the fact that Lars Gullin had severe substance abuse problems, he continued to perform with Chet Baker. Sadly, Mr. Gullin had passed away from a heart attack that came about from his long-term addiction to methadone.
