Notes

The Clovers, who were natives of the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area, were a prosperous rhythm and blues and doo wop group that started to professionally record in 1950 two tunes which were Yes Sir, That’s My Baby and When You Come Back To Me at a local recording studio. During this time, the group had four members, who were Harold “Hal” Lucas, John “Buddy” Bailey, Mathew McQuarter and Harold Winley.

When this group earned a contract to record at Atlantic recording studio, a new member named Bill Harris, who was the instrumentalist, had joined the group in 1951, and the Clovers had recorded the tunes Don’t You Know I Love You and Skylark. Accordingly, these tunes were issued by means of Atlantic 934, which was their first Atlantic disc of 45 rpm and of 78 rpm.

When Mr. Bailey was called to do his armed forces duty, two temporary replacements only lasted one year until the third “replacement” named Billy Mitchell had proved very successful that he remained with the group after Mr. Bailey had finished his armed forces duty. Even though only one tune, which was Love, Love, Love had achieved national success by means of both the Billboard and Cash Box hit parade of discs of 45 rpm, other wonderful tunes that this group had recorded were One Mint Julep, Devil Or Angel, Hey Doll Baby and Blue Velvet.

Although this was the first disc of 33.33 rpm of the Clovers that was issued, two tunes, One Mint Julep and Good Lovin’ were issued by means of the Rock And Roll Forever of various artists disc of which the catalog # was Atlantic 1239. Furthermore, this disc was re-released in September 1957 by means of the Atlantic 8009 disc of 33.33 rpm.
