Notes Charles Mingus was an accomplished double bassist, pianist and bandleader who was a proponent of the creative activity of immediate music pieces, which combines performance with the communication of emotions and the spontaneous response to other musicians. Though Mr. Mingus could not read music well, he excelled playing the piano, the cello and the double bass. Later, Mr. Mingus had studied the bass under Herman Reinshagen and composition techniques with Lloyd Reese. Consequently, Mr. Mingus had started to play professionally in bands that were conducted by renowned conductors, such as Lionel Hampton and Charlie Parker. When Mr. Mingus had relocated to New York City, he had co-established a small record label so that he may conduct his recording career to best suit his needs. However, Mr. Mingus had felt that he had not gained any commercial success until he had released Pithecanthropus Erectus by means of Atlantic records. Less than a year later, Mr. Mingus had recorded this Atlantic disc, "The Clown" which was narrated by Jean Shepherd, who was a well-known New York City radio and television personality. Additionally, by means of the side 1 label, Hudson "Lead Belly" Ledbetter was erroneously credited a co-writer of the "Haitian Fight Song." Though this ultra-creative music style disc was an innovative concept of Mr. Mingus, this disc did not sell well, but Mr. Mingus had continued to excel in the entertainment industry despite some reading challenges that he needs to overcome.
