Notes Bobby Short, who was born and reared in Danville, IL, was a childhood classmate of renowned actor Dick Van Dyke and Donald O'Connor. After Mr. Short turned eleven years of age, he had relocated to Chicago where he started doing gratuitous street performances until Mr. Short was able to establish a musical career in the Chicago night clubs. Despite the fact that Bobby Short had become an important icon at the Cafe Carlyle, he was also a regular patron at Ted Hook's Backstage, which was located at Eighth Avenue and West 45th Street. When Mr. Short was no longer able to perform at the Cafe Carlyle due to the decline of his physical health, he passed away the 21 March 2005 of leukemia at the New York Presbyterian Hospital.
