Notes

Joe Castro was a jazz pianist who specialized in jazz tunes that had a fast tempo, rapid chord changes and many changes from one tonality to another, and improvvisation, which means that an artist invents melodies and lines over a progression of chords that are played by rhythm section instruments and accompanied by drums.

Though Mr. Castro was reared near the Pacific Coast, he had established his first jazz trio while he lived in Hawaii. When Mr. Castro had relocated to New York City, his trio had performed in the top city jazz clubs, such as Basin Street, the Embers, the Hickory House and Birdland. Accordingly the trio were greatly praised by Leonard Feather and Dave Brubeck that they got a recording contract at Atlantic Records where this first Castro LP was made.

The tunes of this Atlantic disc was designed for casual listening so that distressed individuals could ease their tension thru the slow tempo. Additionally, three ensembles, such as a large orchestra with strings and vocals, another string orchestra with no voices and a vocal jazz combo in which Mr. Castro is accompanied by trumpet, alto, and rhythm section, were utilized to make this LP.

Though this disc did not sell well, Mr. Castro had relocated to Los Angeles to be associated mainly with the Teddy Edwards trio from whom Mr. Castro learned that he could comfortably play without having to deal with the distress that occurs when his band had toured various regions of the United States.
