Notes

Barbara Carroll was a jazz pianist and singer who began to play classical piano at a young age, but had later switched to jazz music. Though Ms. Carroll had attended the New England Conservatory of Music, she quit due to the fact that the schooling had conflicted her time for which she played in various bands. In 1948, one year after Ms. Carroll was branded “the first lady that ever played the bebop piano, her band trio had briefly worked with Benny Goodman. After two guitarists had stopped playing with Ms. Carroll’s trio, Ms. Carroll had decided to have a trio of which one played the bass, another the drums and another the piano.

Ms. Carroll’s trio of Joe Shulman (bassist) and Herb Wasserman (drummer), who had collaborated in the Broadway production of Me And Juliet, were the same trio that played the seven tunes of the a-side of this disc.

Mary Lou Williams, who performed the seven tunes of the b-side of this disc, was a jazz pianist who had written hundreds of musical compositions and had recorded massive amounts of tunes that were featured by means of more than one hundred discs that were in the format of discs of 33.33, 45 and 78 rpm.

In 1945, Ms. Williams had composed the Zodiac Suite in which each of the twelve sections corresponded to a sign of the Zodiac. She recorded this tune with Jack Parker and Al Lucas and had performed this tune at the New York City Hall. When Ms. Williams had decided to temporarily stop performing, she had converted to the Catholic faith and was baptized at Saint Ignatius Church.

Though this disc had poorly sold, Ms. Williams and Ms. Carroll will eternally be remembered for their unique style of playing jazz piano.
