Notes

Billy Taylor, who was a jazz pianist, composer and broadcaster, who had attended the Washington D. C.-based Dunbar High School, which was the first secondary school to enroll African-American students. Later, Mr. Taylor had attended Virginia State College where he initially majored in sociology, but changed his field of study to music.

After graduation, Mr. Taylor had relocated to New York to professionally play piano with both the Ben Webster Quartet and the Machito mambo band from which he developed a desire for Latin music. Mr. Taylor also became music director of The Subject Is Jazz, the first television series that had focused on jazz and was produced by the National Educational Television Network.

Less than a year before Mr. Taylor was the television jazz director, he had recorded this disc by means of Atlantic records. This disc was not a good seller, but Mr. Taylor continued to promote jazz music thru radio and television broadcasts until he suffered from a stroke and died of a heart attack.
