Notes

Mario Escudero Valero Jimenez Valverde, who was one of a few Spanish flamenco guitarists and was professionally called Mario Escudero, was born in Alicante, Spain the 11 October 1928. Mr. Escudero was musically influenced by his mother, who was a Spanish singer and his father, who was a music instructor. Not long after the Valverde family had relocated to San Sebastian, where this family had established and ran a prosperous tailor shop that was close to La Concha beach, the Valverde family was forced to flee from San Sebastian and emigrate to France during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s.

After this war, the Valverde family had moved to Madrid where Mr. Escudero had studied classical guitar through his father and had recieved flamenco guitar lessons from Ramon Montoya. A few years later, Mr. Escudero had made his professional musical debut at the Teatro Espanol with Vicente Escudero and Carmita Garcia.

After Mr. Escudero had relocated to the United States in the early 1950’s, he was one of the first Spanish musicians who had helped spread the flamenco style beyond the confines of Spain. With Sabicas and Carlos Montoya, Mr. Escudero had made the viability of the solo flamenco guitar a concert instrument. Accordingly, they became well-respected and well-praised by means of their listeners at Carnegie Hall and the Town Hall, both of which are in New York City. Also, Mr. Escudero and Ramon Montoya were invited by John F. Kennedy to play the flamenco at the White House where Mr. Montoya had called Mr. Escudero “the best flamenco guitarist of this new generation.”

Despite the fact that Mr. Escudero was a supreme flamenco musician who had imported such music to the United States, had made the solo flamenco a concert instrument and had composed all the tunes of this Atco disc of 33.33 rpm, this disc did not sell well. Finally, Mr. Escudero had utilized the name El Nino de Alicante (the child of Alicante) by means of this Atco disc and other various label di
