Notes

Gypsy, which was a musical that opened the 21 May 1959 in New York City, became an immediate sensation within the first few days of production. Although the lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim and the music was composed by Jules Styne, this musical was a fictionalized rendition of the career of Gypsy Rose Lee, which spanned from her childhood performances, thru vaudeville and into her prosperity thru which Ms. Lee was a renowned stripper of Minsky’s Burlesque. Due to the drill sargent-style of the aggressive personality of her mother, Mrs. Rose Thompson Hovick, Ms. Rose Lee became the well-known and well-respected actress up till the day that Ms. Rose Lee had passed away.

By means of this Gypsy disc of 33.33 rpm, all the tunes were sung in a jazz-style by various artists due to the arrangement of Mr. Herb Geller, a trained alto saxophonist, who was influenced by Charlie Parker at the time that Mr. Geller had established his modern jazz-style music. Despite the successful career of Mr. Geller and the prosperity of the Broadway Gypsy musical, this Atco disc did not sell very well, so this jazz LP has become a sought-after disc primarily of jazz music listeners.

Finally, the front jacket of this Atco disc indicates the "full title" of Herb Geller And His All-Stars Play Selections From Jules Styne and Stephen Sondheim's Music for Gypsy.
