Notes

Jelena (Helen Merrill) Milcetic is a jazz vocalist whose career spans more than six decades. Eight years after Ms. Merill had begun to sing in jazz clubs in the Bronx in 1944, she made her recording debut at which she was requested to sing “A Cigarette For Company” with the Earl Hines band.

In 1954, Ms. Merrill had secured a recording contract with the newly formed Emarcy label, which was a division of Mercury records, and had recorded her eponymous disc of 33.33 rpm, which had featured Clifford Brown and Oscar Pettiford. Besides, a young Quincy Jones had produced and arranged the tunes of this disc. Because of the prosperity of this self-titled disc, Ms. Merrill was asked to sign for an additional four album contract by Mercury records.

Although this is the first and only Atco disc of 33.33 rpm that Ms. Merrill had recorded, she sang renowned country tunes in a jazz-like style through the arrangement and conduction of Chuck Sagle. In fact, the majority of these tunes were popularized by Hank Williams and Eddi Arnold. While this disc of 33.33 did not sell well, another jazz singer named Ray Charles had recorded two prosperously selling discs of which he sang popular country and western songs in a jazzy rock and roll style.
