Notes

Ada Lee is a singer who was reared in a family in which her father was a professional trumpet player and her mother was both a pianist and a singer. Since Ms. Lee was an adolescent, she had intensively studied music with teachers in Springfield, Ohio and at the Dayton Conservatory of Music where she sang with bands in Cincinnati and Dayton, and had won first place in a local talent show contest that was broadcast by means of WHIO of Dayton. Furthermore, Ms. Lee was granted a scholarship to Wilberforce University where she continued to study music.

After Ms. Lee left Wilberforce, she began to perform in both the Count Basie and Lionel Hampton bands. A short time later, Ms. Lee was becoming more renowned to where she had the occasion to perform at the Apollo Theater in New York and at the Flame Show Bar in Detroit.

When George Wein saw Ms. Lee perform in Buffalo, he was so impressed that he not only became her personal manager, but had brought her to Atlantic records where she made her debut professional recordings of Moanin’ and You Always Hurt The One You Love. Accordingly, both these tunes were issued by means of the same Atco disc of 45 rpm. Within a few months, Ms. Lee had recorded twelve tunes that were issued by means of this, the Ada Lee Comes On, disc of 33.33 rpm, which was originally issued by means of a yellow label background that had featured a black harp drawing and Atco in large white block letters.
