Richard Behrke was a phenomenal trumpet player and later a pianist, who studied music at both the Manhattan School of Music and Brooklyn College. Mr. Behrke and Roberto “Bobby Darin” Cassotto had played in a band of five musicians when they attended the Bronx High School of Science in the early 1950s.

After Mr. Behrke stopped attending music school, he made his debut road trip with a strumental band that ended up in Las Vegas, where he spent half a year at the Tropicana Hotel. Later, Mr. Behrke had returned to New York where he played piano with a trio at local clubs until December of 1958, which was the time that Mr. Behrke had begun to arrange the musical scores of Bobby Darin’s club acts.

For Richard Behrke’s first disc, he had chosen two experienced musicians, such as Mel Pollan, a renowned bassist who was a member of Les Brown’s band. The second musician was Frank Devito who had played drums for Buddy DeFranco, Nelson Riddle and David Pell.

Despite the fact that this disc of 33.33 did not sell well, Mr. Behrke had chosen the musical score of West Side Story simply because Mr. Behrke had found that this was an exceptionally wonderful score for a unified idea with which this band could rework to their musical style.
