Notes Betty Carter was an outstanding jazz songstress who was renowned for her scat singing and her technique of creative activity of immediate musical composition, which combines performance with the communication of emotions and instrumental technique. Despite the fact that Ms. Carter was brought up in a city, where much opportunity existed to where one could be a professional jazz artist, she was taught to be an extremely independent woman to the level where who will not expect any nurturing from her family, nor be co-dependent with anybody. Accordingly, such rearing made her so strong and determined that she consistently practiced singing before she became professional. Even though Ms. Carter had numerous occasions to perform with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, her big opportunity occurred when she joined the Lionel Hampton band. The unhealthy level of independence that Ms. Carter had gained during her early life had resulted in conflicts with Lionel Hampton due to the fact that she had despised the swing style of Mr. Hampton and had refused to sing in a swinging style, Mr. Hampton had dismissed Ms. Carter at least seven times over a two and a half year period. When Ms. Carter had reached New York City, she had become more renowned and respected when she recorded with the Ray Bryant Trio. Accordingly, Ms. Carter had earned the opportunity that she sang at the Apollo Theater. When Ms. Carter had generated much fame, she secured a recording contract with Epic records in 1955. A few years later, the first solo disc of 33.33 rpm of Ms. Carter, which was called Out There, was issued by the Peacock label in 1958. Though this disc of 33.33 rpm did not sell well and was the only disc of Betty Carter that Atco had issued, Ms. Carter still sang every tune to the level where most jazz listeners had purchased this disc. Finally, all the tunes of this disc were arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman.
