Notes

Paulo Alencar is a renowned bandleader who is one of the most influential and respected musicians of Brazil. Mr. Alencar’s who was formally trained in both popular and classical music had studied music both in Brazil and at the Julliard School of Music in the United States. Additionally, Mr. Alencar attributes the popularity of bossa nova of the United States to its merger with American jazz. By means of this Atco disc, Paulo Alencar and his band play jazz with the new beat.

Mr. Alencar had recorded the tunes of this disc in Rio de Janeiro in late 1962 by utilizing diverse rhythmic patterns, improvisations and percussion effects that were fitted to the type of music that was played. Although every song was recorded in a completely different and new way from such songs were previously played in Brazil, most of the tunes of this disc were not previously recorded for the North American bossa nova listeners.

Despite the fact that this Atco disc of 33.33 rpm did not sell well, bossa nova music had continued to be played at many North American night clubs for the next several decades.
