Notes

This album was originally intended for release in the USSR but copies were brought in to the UK and US where they were sold at highly inflated prices. To prevent Paul's fans being ripped off, Richard Ogden, his manager, approached Melodiya, the state-owned record company that issued the album. The company's agreement with EMI forbade them from exporting the album, but with EMI's permission Richard arranged to buy back a limited quantity for Paul's fans (Melodiya were allowed to press replacement copies). They were made available through Paul's fan club, first as Issue 51 of the Club Sandwich paper, and then through the club, which was the only official outlet in the West.

According to Club Sandwich, the first 50,000 copies came in a yellow laminated sleeve (contrasted with the more austere matt MPL-approved version), with fresh sleeve notes by Andrei Gavrilov replacing a translation of Roy Carr's full, authorised commentary. Not only that, this first batch omitted Gershwin's Summertime as Melodiya's Aprelev factory felt they couldn't cope with more than 12 songs on an album. After London argued there was no technical reason why not, the remaining 350,000 copies had all 13 - and also the correct sleeve and notes.

A 14-song CD was released in 1991.

Without revealing any 'info' I can tell you a vast number of these arrived in the UK in 1988 via soviet aircrews who were ferrying freight to a certain smallish southern airport and then to a friends shop locally, whereby they were sold by the suitcase to Macca nutters.

(at one point I had about 10 copies of it.)

As there are both 11 track and 13 track versions here, shouldn't they be separated into two different entries?

Thanks TopPopper. To clarify the pressings I've called the white label pressing the "MPL-authorised pressing" as that is what it is.

There appear to be at least two different pressings prior to this "second pressing", as pictured above. Given the extra track on the white label edition, I think it is more accurate to call it a reissue.

The white labels (with the cover showing the MPL logo) is the MPL-authorised second pressing of 350,000.

Not sure if these are first pressing, second pressing etc, in the conventional sense. In the USSR, there were about six record pressing plants in various states, and usually each plant would make up its own labels. The horizontal text just above the play hole gives the location the LP was manufactured. Above we have Tashkent in Uzbekistan (red labels), Leningrad (slightly orange labels) and Moscow (white labels). My hunch is, they were all issued about the same time.

I've added some notes. I was lucky enough to get hold of a copy of the second pressing through Club Sandwich back in 1989.
