Hi VJ, yes, there is something very odd about it as it is yet to be assigned to any country at all. Could it have been made on another planet? The only thing to go on is the back cover states "manufactured and distributed by Universal Music Enterprises, a division of UMG Recordings Group Inc. 2220 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90404". Where it was actually made and distributed is a complete mystery as "GS1 member companies can manufacture products anywhere in the world" and I got my copy from JB Hi Fi yesterday. So how to list this one is really anyone's guess but the unreliable Discwrongs lists it as USA and the address on the cover is a USA address so I went with that. It is however, also an Australian release due to the fact that JB can order it, as they can with just about new vinyl these days as regular stock.
The problems with country classification apparent in CD Albums world are manifesting themselves in Vinyl Albums world due to the globalisation of manufacturing and distributing practises witnessed in the CD era also being the norm for current LP production and distribution. Here's an LP I cheekily yet still correctly listed as an Australian release (check link on page), it is also the EU release and an international release depending how you wish to interpret our guidelines. The same thing applies to this record and it can be correctly listed three (or more) different ways. It certainly is a conundrum.
Hi Lee, I don't think Universal can use the Gordy label name, because when Berry Gordy first sold Motown to the joint venture of MCA and Boston Ventures in 1988, he started a new company called The Gordy Company (which I think eventually became West Grand Media), so that entity holds/held the rights to the name. When the CD deluxe edition of Rick James' STREET SONGS was released in the early 2000's, the discs used the Gordy label colours of purple and yellow, but with the Motown logo, unlike reissues of Stevie Wonder's and Marvin Gaye's albums which used the Tamla label design.
Vinyl is more of a purple colour in real life but we all know that weird things can happen scanning coloured vinyl. A nicely produced re-issue from 2018 but would have been nice to see it come out on the Gordy label. Bought in Australia new from a regular store but it seems silly to list it as Australian (it is) or International (it is that too) so I stuck with the USA where it was made and was most likely the primary market.
