Track A1 actually written by Eugene Record, Reve' Gipson
Track A2 actually written by Eugene Record, Quinton Joseph
(both tracks initially published by an ASCAP affiliate, hence the 'Eugene Acklin' songwriting credit as Record was a BMI member)
Track B3 instrumental backing track later reused for Jackie Wilson's version
The upward arrow pointing on the variant {Images #457022 & 457023} was a characteristic of Columbia pressings throughout the time they pressed LP's with this design, right up to the design change in fall 1972. (From mid-1970 to early 1971, Columbia even pressed Brunswick 45's with the arrow pointing upwards before rearranging it so that it pointed leftwards as it should.) Sounds like the copy you have is a Capitol pressing, they had the arrow pointing leftwards as Decca had in their last years of distributing Brunswick. Or was it a Philips Recording Co. (PRC) pressing, with 2.75" diameter pressing ring?
W.B.lbl....thanks, as always for top info. I did find out about the single with the correct co writer, as you state, and FYI my copy bought brand new in UK, but with clipped album sleeve (cut out), has a variant label to your copy, with the "Brunswick" at 9 o'clock, "Stereophonic" at 3 o'clock, and the "rainbow arrow" connecting the other two inbetween. The printed label copy is from 12 o'clock, to 6 o'clock, with album title preceeding group name.
I'll post scans as soon as I'm able to.
Obviously, the same multi-colored background printed label blanks are used for both variants, and the orientation of the overlay print gives an unusual 'slant' to the finished article.
Was this regular, I do not ever recall seeing one like that before.....where part of the label track details are partially obscured by the bright rainbow colours of the corporate logo.
"Eugene Acklin" was a pseudonym necessitated by the fact that Eugene Record was signed to BMI and the two songs were originally published by an ASCAP affiliate. Ironically, Barbara Acklin did not co-write either of the two songs; Record's collaborators were actually Reve' Gipson on Track A1 (as would be made clear on single (B) 55462), and Quinton Joseph on Track A2.
Incidentally, the instrumental backing track for B3 would be later used for Jackie Wilson's version.
Somewhat ambiguous composer credits for A1, A2, but exactly how they appear on the Side 1 (Side A) label, with no supporting writers credits on sleeve.
I can only assume that they represent co writers Record & Acklin, who I believe were husband and wife at one time.
