Very interesting and puzzling indeed! Both Schwann and Joel Whitburn's Top Albums book give the original US catalogue number as COC 79104, and this is the number that appears in the Australian Chart Book as well; that I would expect, as Aussie and NZ WEA usually used the same catalogue numbers as the USA; further digging, in Terry Hounsome's NEW ROCK RECORD, indicates that 59106 was the UK number - could the Aussie "release" with this number be an imported UK pressing? Anyway, in 1977 the Stones changed the distribution of their label outside North America from Atlantic to EMI, and with that the non-US prefixes changed from the (suggestive) COC to the (more strongly suggestive!) CUN, but it looks like WEA might have kept the existing albums for a few more years, as they are still listed as being WEA-distributed in the May 1979 AMSCAT (Australian Music Sales Catalogue), with only the later "Some Girls" (CUN 39108) being listed as an EMI release. May 1980 AMSCAT lists this as EMI distributed, CUN 79104, and indeed, all the previous WEA albums are now EMI distributed, suggesting that WEA had a three-year sell-off period. So, I would leave this entry as 1976, and the EMI one can probably go on here as well, as it was only the prefix that was changed. If there is actually an Aussie pressing with 59106, that would need its own entry.
Thanks earlybird but discogs lists this album and the following as 1976 releases of this album
" Black And Blue
(LP, Album) Rolling Stones Records COC 79104 Australia 1976
Black And Blue
(LP, Album, Gat) Rolling Stones Records CUN 79104 New Zealand 1976
CUN.79104
Black And Blue
(LP, Gat) Rolling Stones Records COC 59106 Australia 1976"
Albums with cat# COC 79104 were also released in Spain and Yugoslavia which makes me think they may have had an initial global run with the US blue label version but that's speculation. The CUN.79104 would be an 80's release and like all of those above will need a separate entry as they all have different cat#s. It was definitely bought here (Australia) on the day of release or very close to. Anyway, it's proving to be an interesting one.
Bit of a weird one, USA pressing (same cat# and label indicates US pressing), distributed from New Zealand (Gatefold 2 notes this) but I think that distribution included Australia so used Australia as country of release. Will change to New Zealand if anyone can prove it was released in Australia a different way. I don't know what happened to the cover looks like I tried to feed Mick an ice cream while on a trip or something. Anyway feel free to replace with a decent one if you've got one.
