Notes

The Electric Flag was a blues rock American music band that was established in 1967 by Mike Bloomfield (lead guitar) and Barry Goldberg (keyboard), who had recruited musicians, such as Harvey Brooks (bassist), Buddy Miles (drummer) and Nick Gravenites, (vocalist), Peter Strazza (tenor saxophone) and Marcus Doubleday (trumpet).

Shortly after the formation of the Flag in San Francisco, this group began to record the music for the soundtrack of the motion picture “The Trip.” To add more liveliness to this soundtrack, Mr. Bloomfield had hired Paul Beaver to use a Moog Synthesizer, which control the pitch and loudness via a voltage-controlled oscillator.

After that project was complete, this group had made their first public performance in June 1967 at Monterrey Pop Festival, where they sang Groovin’ Is Easy. This tune was later issued on their debut Columbia LP, “A Long Time Comin’” and was also released by means of a Columbia disc of 45 rpm. Though this band had prosperously played at Monterrey, they were still unfamiliar with the general public due in part to the band’s inability to complete “A Long Time Comin’” disc by the mid-autumn of 1967 and to the hiring of already heroin-addicted Marcus Doubleday. Consequently, three other band members had developed heroin dependency and one member had quit the group to bring one’s personal difficulties under control.

After this group had spent six months recording A Long Time Comin, this disc of 33.33 was monaurally issued in March 1968 only to radio station record spinners, whereas this disc was only stereophonically issued to the record shops. Regardless, this Columbia disc was such a big seller that it had peaked higher than position # 25 by means of both the Billboard and Cash Box hit parades. This audition mono disc is so difficult to find that one might easily pay $500 to purchase a near mint condition copy.

Finally, the tune “You Don’t Realize” was dedicated with great respect to Steve Cropper and Otis Redd
