If only "The Family" had received a truly sympathetic, Rock production like this, who knows what would have happened!

A few months ago someone (USA) was talking to me about the Taurus/Stairway to Heaven controversy, and he didn't recognize that Spirit was a very important band. I regret that I didn't set him straight, but I was short on time and not in the mood to talk. Spirit may be less popular than Led Zeppelin, but I think Spirit is more listenable. I believe they're in the Hall of Fame--or should be!

It seems Spirits story is similar to Love's-more popular in the UK than the US, but Spirit did manage one big hit here in the US "I Got A Line On You" hit #25. But definitely more of an underground band, that was pretty popular on FM radio. I think their avant garde jazz tinged leanings scared off alot of the heavy rock and psychedelic fans in the US. Their versatility hindered more than helped them here it seems.

i have the impression spirit meant an awful lot more in the uk (or, at least, in england :-) ), than in merkia - nearly all my friends in york rated "spirit" and "the twelve dreams" very highly; but we bought the lps, not the singles, and didn't expect or look for their singles to make "top of the pops" - and they had no chance on daytime radio1, which was very much a play-listed format.

(later spirit albums were something of a let-down, though iirc brian bought at least one of them; then yr hmbl srppnt. lost track of them rather, 'til john played me "spirit of '76" in sahf-east lunnon, in 1978 - and boom! - that's one amazing late nights-early mornings "wasted" experience :-))°

° - /me *waves* at john & vicky, just in case he/they've made it here to 45cat

I couldn't agree more strongly Lee Wrecker. An oft underappreciated band and talents.

This band surely deserved more success in the charts than #111 and #92 for the fantastic Mr. Skin. I recall Mr. Skin could still fill a dance-floor in the mid 80's.

Added sticker promoting the single "Nature's Way" which was only able to muster a bubbling under chart position of #111. "Mr. Skin" would be reissued as a single in 1973 and break into the hot 100 at position #92.

The orange-label {Images #829535 & 829536}, based on fonts used on the left and right sides, would have dated such copy to beginning c.1974.

With acknowledgement to HarvestmanMan, added upgraded front cover image. Also added back cover, gatefold and variant label (orange label) images. The initial release would have been on the yellow label.
