From Wiki Bill Wellings, an Australian former catalogue model, had pioneered the anonymous pop cover versions concept with the Top Six EPs in the mid-60s, a series that gave a big break to a young arranger named Johnny Harris.[2]
Wellings formed BWD in the late 1960s and did an exclusive deal with Music for Pleasure (MFP) – the first 'Hits' LP, Hits 67, came out some time later. It was widely rumoured that this LP featured David Bowie singing on the track "Penny Lane", but it was actually session singer Tony Steven. Hits 70 did feature Elton John.
Any ideas on the artists on this compilation? Since "Music For Pleasure" was associated with EMI and usually released material by original artists I'm wondering why there are no artists given at all. Some versions are really good, others not so much. Rocky Sharpe is shown on front and back cover but only listed as "model".
A few errors on this record. They claim that the track "That'll Be The Day" is usually associated with Bobby Vee and the Crickets instead of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Be-Bop-A-Lula is misidentified as Be-Bob-A-Lula on the back cover.
