KGB Radio (AM 1360 and FM 101.5) was one of the big/popular stations in San Diego (and indeed SoCal). It is also the "birthplace" of the San Diego Chicken, who was originally known as the KGB Chicken before gaining such national recognition. In November of 1972 KGB organized a benefit concert for United Way which featured Quicksilver Messenger Service, J. Geils Band, Foghat, Jesse Colin Young, Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show and Boones Farm as performers. Nearly 52,000 attended the concert at San Diego Stadium and plans were to hold another benefit concert in 1973 due to its' overwhelming success. However, reevaluated fire regulations limited the potential crowd size for a 1973 show, so the radio station basically stumbled upon this idea of issuing a community based LP with songs about the San Diego area. As LaurenceD noted, the price was only $1.01 and the proceeds went to United Way. I was fortunate to be one of the many at that 1972 concert and purchased the Home Grown LP each year it was offered, which ended up being a total of 7. There was an eighth album produced after a lull of four years, but the luster and interest had waned due to the four year gap and it was the last attempted.
This is the first of the KGB "Home Grown" compilations, featuring local artists performing songs about the San Diego area. I think that copies sold for $1.01 with the proceeds going to charity. These LPs sold pretty well, and as a result they can be found in nearly every budget bin in the county. You can read a bit more about the Home Grown series here.

Note that the recording of Chula Vista originally appeared on a single (Highland CW-10) credited to Possum, coupled with "The Cockroach That Ate Cincinnati". I'm still looking for one of those!
