A band I'd never heard of named Van Halen walks in and people start taking pictures with them. The blonde, most flamboyant member of the group puts a 45 RPM single of "You Really Got Me" in my hand and says "Buy this record, brother", and I do as I'm told. About 3 years later, I actually go 2 see Van Halen at the Capital Centre in Landover MD. All because they came into Peaches Records in Rockville. I still have that single David Lee Roth handed me. Before I ever knew about Tower Records, there was Peaches Records...
Peaches Records & Tapes was a pretty successful independent chain of stores that began in 1975 in Georgia (thus "Peaches") and closed there final store in 2001. At their peak they had about 45 locations in the U.S. and were in most major metropolitan markets. They were good at getting major artists to do in-store appearances at many of their locations. They also became widely known for their iconic record crates.
