I'd also say this is a reissue not the original pressing. Apart from Island being pre-Emi distribution, I also see the cassette and 8.trk cartridge were only availabel with the "11" catalogue suffix. Also on Discogs they states this is a 1976 re-release

I still claim this to be the '75 reissue as ROLA (gatefold) and ROLL (single sleeve) clearly did not start until summer or autumn that year.

Hi rocket666, indeed it appears there were indeed many ROLL cat no’s. but very few ROLA.

Rather belated aside; from my contempory noted discography; (along with RAK and Rockin' Horse).
I have written a third ROLA (ROLA 2) a reissue in '76 of the '73 Davey Johnstone solo album - presumably, as I don't have it, only the original - still a gatefold sleeve.
Two other PIGL albums reissued in '76, both by Kiki Dee.
PIGL 5 as ROLL 5 & PIGL 10 as ROLL 4..

I have the initial copy, complete with press kit, somewhere Chez Macrow. I'll dig it out and see if anything more can be gleaned from the included papers.

Rocket was indeed distributed by Island when it started and there are copies of this album with the label also having the Island' credit in white perimeter text. There were no extra goodies in any version of the disc, by way of posters or owt else.

At the launch gig/party for Rocket Records - which some of us were invited to attend - as well as Elton, John Reid et al, there were also some senior Island honchos (not Chris Blackwell, though).

Hi chrisb - pretty sure, Rocket was distributed by Island when it first started in 1973, and this September 1978 article from Billboard says that Rocket and EMI weren't renewing the deal that had been in place for 3 years, so the EMI issues were definitely after the Island ones. The original Island issue may well have been in January 1975 (1974 copyright date notwithstanding), but the EMI one would be around September/October 1975 at the earliest. Unfortunately the Billboard archives online don't seem to have any article from 1975 to confirm the distribution date change, and both wikipedia and Discogs make no mention of it.

EDIT: forgot to mention that the non-gatefold EMI issues were prefixed ROLL, nicely matching the ROKN of the singles to give ROKN ROLL.

PhilMH, are you sure about your query re the chronology, as the change to ROKN prefix for the Rocket 45s (you suggest presumably with the change of distributor) looks like it happened a good 10 months (latter end of '75) after this album prefix change, soon after its release in Jan 75

Actually it seems there only ever were 2 ROLA cat number releases, ROLA 1 and ROLA 3

I think the chronology might be back to front here. Rocket was originally distributed by Island, with the catalogue numbers having the PIGL prefix, and the train pointing to the left on the labels. When distribution changed to EMI, as on this release, the prefix changed to ROLA and the train pointed right. See also 45cat's UK singles discography for similar change in labels and prefixes (PIG to ROKN).

I'm not sure in this case there were additional goodies, but Ade may know more...

So what are the differences between Rola 1 and Pigl 11? Bothe are gatefold... any insert, poster, sticker?

....and hence the ROLA 1 sleeves and labels are very rarely seen nowadays.

(Info form Ade Macrow- thanks Ade …..)
ROLA 1 becomes PIGL 11.
The ROLA series was Rocket's 'super deluxe' range , retailing at between £2.45-£2.75 an album rather than the then standard £2.15-£2.30 for an 'ordinary' LP. The higher price was usually due to to gatefold sleeves, stickers, posters or other such added matter.
Quickly realising that this album wasn't selling in sufficient quantities at the higher price, Rocket swiftly downgraded it, moving it into their standard PIGL series, but -in error?- retained the deluxe packaging, whilst going to the trouble and cost of re-setting some packaging details, and labels.

Note: publishing credits on the inner sleeve differ between ROLA 1 and PIGL 11, there's a Rocket logo on the back cover of ROLA 1, and the Rocket train on the labels are puffing off in opposite directions on the 2 releases
