Notes

Produced by Pink Floyd.

Gatefold sleeve, with two stickers and two posters.
Very first pressings had a "solid" blue prism label design, which soon became "hollow" prism labels.
The sleeve was also a very dark midnight blue colour, rather than black.

Since Roger Waters turned out to be an obnoxious Israel-hater, I don't put the record on anymore. I don't even listen to the new version "Redux".

My vinyl is A2 / B2 with GDA and GGG stampers. My 'solid blue' labels at (3pm) GDA and GGG stamper code matrices suggest solid blue labels were used in great numbers. Assuming approximately 300 pressings per stamper letter. GDA = stamper 103 and GGG = 111, with each stamper used successfully pressing 300 sides, (my Side A) GDA stamper code = 103 x 300 = 30,750 of (+or-) 150 & (my Side B) GGG stamper code = GGG = 111 x 300 = 33,150 of (+or-) 150. So counting upto my pressing, can assume 30,900 + 33,300 64,200 solid blue labels were used (at least) however who is to say how many more were pressed beyond mine??

So tell us your Solid Blue stamper codes folks so we can get an idea.

Is there any reason pics of the "US Sound Lab issue" are on this page at all? The pic is of a 1979 USA release that is already listed on the site here and has a different cat# MFSL 1-017 and is on the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab label.

Note!, Ist presses came with black record inner sleeve same delicate black type as Beatles Abbey Road inner sleeves.
Its Sleeve is quite Blue by comparison to those shown and with Blue EMI text, etc. as in Magic Marmalade's image

I have an EMI Hayes test pressing of this LP 2 x One sided discs. The white inner sleeve is stamped up 14th Feb 1973. The matrix marks is A2 B2. I would welcome a discussion of the reasons why and how these discs were used. The previous lacquer used to make the A1 B1 stamper it is said was defective so that was destroyed. Whether any test pressings were created and also destroyed .. I just don't know. I also have Animals test pressing 2 x One sided which has an earlier 1976 date to its release ( I think the same difference)

An interesting phenomenon regarding the value of this that I've noticed:

Even just a year or so back, the solid blue label press would set you back around £800+ (depending on condition of course), while the more usual blue outline label press could be had cheap as proverbial chips (£5 - £10 in most cases), the rarity of the solids proportional to the outliners being apparent on eBay's listings...

... but as the months have gone by, people have been buying the outliners en masse (obviously, because they are cheaper), with each listing attracting healthy numbers of bidders, while the solid blues have been left virtually untouched.

The result of this is that looking now, the solid blue value has plummeted to around £250 - £400 (still not apparently shifting even at that price), and the outliners can now sell for £30 - £40 quid (condition / posters / stickers etc.)...
...And now there seem to be almost as many solid blues listed as outliners (UK standard press), with the later listings drying up quick. As you can imagine, there are plenty of Dark Sides about, but it would seem that with all the frenzied buying, even this may very well be in short supply.

And this phenomena is not only confined to this title... Piper, and Saucerful are also seeing elevated second press values (while first presses of those seem to be largely unaffected, which I think may just be down to the fact that they simply flat out rare).

Meanwhile.... Pink Floyd values continue to soar, probably faster than any other artist.

Something I've been wanting to know about this, having never been fortunate enough to even see an original solid blue triangle label copy... is if the quality of the vinyl (And sound) differs greatly from the first outline triangle label copies.

And it would be nice to see a scan of the blue-ish cover, as I've not been able to see any photos that adequately represent the difference between these and the true black covers.

If anyone has both kinds, and can upload a scan that illustrates the difference (Comparison Photo maybe), and can tell about the audio difference, it would be greatly appreciated.

Got another copy of this in the summer... better condition than my other two as well as being earlier.

But my 1979 copy is still the daddy... marginally thicker vinyl than even the earlier copy, and feels more weighty... really does sound better too!

An odd tip regarding identifying the age of a copy of this:

Smell it!

I have had five copies over the years (currently two in my possession... sadly not the solid blue prism first press!), and while the basic plan for all pressings since 1973 release has been the same, with each new Pink Floyd album being released subsequently, fresh runs of each preceding album accompanied them.

the earliest I currently have was from 15.12.1979.

... I can tell this because it has a cardboard stiffener in the record side of the gatefold with a Woolworths sticker in it giving this date and the store number it was to be sold in!

but also, I have noticed that whatever chemical was used in the treatment of the cardboard of the gatefold degrades over time, releasing a progressively sweeter smell... getting both deeper (in terms of the mustiness of ageing), but with a richer sweetness too... so get your nose in there!

Other things too... the vinyl on the 1983 barcoded edition has white Harvest logo inside bottom left of gatefold (not Blue), and the vinyl is thinner, and the label, ostensibly the same has a kind of "dot matrix" pattern impressed in it.

Will upload scans.

Added scan of Inner Sleeve. This is from my A-10 / B-9 pressing. I think for accuracy sake it's worth people knowing that what they are buying is totally original. Collectors will probably look at this site for tips and pointers and the more reliable the info is the better. For me Inner Sleeves are just as important as the rest of the ephemera that comes with an album

For the cause I've dug out and added my solid prism copy, which has been boxed up for six weeks awaiting an endlessly postponed house move. Don't get me started.

I don't think these posters have been out since I took them off the walls of my room at university in 1976.
It would be nice to see the solid prism labels if anybody's got them.
