Probably the worst sounding release of it. As it's a fold down of the Duophonic Mix.

Finally found a copy of this in the wild last week- a quid at a garage sale I happened to pass.

The reason I'd never paid for one online despite being a Beach Boys obsessive? EMI only got sent the 'duophonic' reprocessed stereo master from the states, and folded that down into mono for this release. Basically it sounds like you're listening to it in the bath, or on laughing gas.

In addition to that, there's not much in the way of treble. Or bass. I've got both cranked on my hi fi right now, and you can get used to it after a while, but basically it's one of those occasions where UK EMI pressed a genuinely terrible sounding record in the sixties!

 You Still Believe In Me
- stereo 1990s re-mix version as vocal guide.

.....here's the full stereo re-mix version, with the ethereal opening, followed by the loping tempo , with Brian alone vocalising single-tracked, while Mike Love sings backup on one verse of the outro, and then the whole group together harmonise on the final verses of the outro....and fade.

The arrangement is to die for, with harmonium, cycle bell et cetera, and full wide stereo separation, but the double-tracked lead vocal by Brian Wilson on the original 1966 mix down to mono is missing.....and that was the killer vocal, lost when two lead vocal takes were bounced to one track, for the mono fold down, and lost forever, on anything but a mono mix.

HEAR THE MONO 1966 MIX BELOW, as Brian Wilson intended it to be.........

You Still Believe In Me - Mono

...took a bit of doing, but I finally hunted down the mono fold down double tracked vocal, originally mixed from 8-track master, and then that vocal master was wiped....

You Still Believe In Me - The most beautiful vocal Brian Wilson ever recorded in my opinion, when aged 23, and much better in the original mono mix, with Brians' two separate vocals folded into one, to give that incredibly warm, emotional vocal performance.
I well remember the late Kenny Everett playing the track on his various radio shows, and telling everyone it was a beautiful song.

Versions of Pet Sounds I've owned are the mono LP, Stereo LP, subsequent Capitol vinyl re-pressings, cassette version, even the 5.1 Audio CD, plus the original reissue CD from 1990, and the Mono/Stereo CD issue, so I kinda own Wilsons' ass.
I saw Brian Wilson and his entourage at London Festival Hall in 2002, where "he" performed all of Pet Sounds, in the order of the album tracks.
He was an old man by then, and vocally well past it, and after he did the whole album, he then wheeled out Tony Asher hisself.....another old geezer.

The remastered so-called stereo version of the song on the Mono/Stereo CD issue is awful, as the original multi-tracked vocal was folded down into mono, and then the tape was wiped......of all the songs to do that to....I was livid. The true stereo of Brians' voices on left and right channel do not combine at all well, and even sound out of tune, which does not happen when mixed together in mono.
That's something young Mr. Wilson mastered years earlier when he would work out the vocal blend of his bands separate vocal parts in his head, and then record them to give the finished, polished result.

As I type this, I'm listening to a radio programme on iTunes, with the late Roger Scott, of London's Capital Radio 194, fronting a programme I recorded from BBC 6 Music, "Classic Albums - Pet Sounds - Friday 19-November-2010 0300-0400hrs", according to my entry on iTunes.

During the 'Classic Albums' show, Brian keeps referring to his vocal "effeminate voice", that he used on the album.....very self deprecating.
The recording of that programme must have taken place in the '90s, or maybe 1980s.

My very first copy of Pet Sounds, from May 1966, had the old Capitol "rainbow" paper labels, but I wore that out, but I still have a Lou Rawls LP from the same era, T 2566, with those labels that I will be posting...............
