albert 17th Jan 2017 | | DVDLove At First Bite - MGM | Added screen-grabs from both versions of the film. When you play the full screen version you get a warning stating that the film has been modified to fit your screen.
As you can see in this case the modification is actually to not apply matting to the image.

albert 28th Dec 2016 | | BookSteve Hanley - The Big Midweek | Just finished reading this book and quite recommend it. As the book progresses the text gets better and the dirt gets juicier, but I think the time frames also speed up, so towards the end it reads like one disaster after another when its more likely that the really bad gigs were few amongst the gigs that went OK.
Mark E. Smith has a terrible reputation but reading the story you can see that his dependence on alcohol is the main source of all the trouble and his long suffering band mates, despite often being sacked and abused, do get welcomed back in the band again and again.

albert 28th Dec 2016 | | Live MusicNew York Dolls @ Malcolm's Club | Apparently one of the first UK dates for the band, they were in the UK recording demos - this predates any proper record releases, and although they were well established in New York the band hadn't really stepped out of their home town.
They did some bigger dates in London and around, and a UK tour was meant to include support slots for Lou Reed but I don't know if that happened. So the Dolls were big in NY and in Hull.

I wasn't there but I know that in 1976 spending 50p was worth nearly 2 pints, or at least a pint and a half.

albert 6th Nov 2016 | | BookCarol Schwartz - VideoHound's Cult Flicks & Trash Pics | Brief notes taken from the cover:
"1313 film reviews.
Forward by Bruce Campbell.
Cult diva and connoisseur of mongrel video Carol Schwartz and video lord Jim Olenski, assisted by a staff of notable critics and scribbling outpatients, deliver the reviews as they see them, and we've been assured they have seen them many, many times.
This rip-snorting, brain-tickling new edition includes 75 sidebars that may bring you up close and personal with the underworld of fringe movie making. An amazing array of indexes, including director, cast, category, alternative title, writer, cinematographer and composer are sure to lead you somewhere. We've included a vast number of startling photographs you'll surely want to cut out and place in your wallet or set in a proper frame for public display."

albert 6th Nov 2016 | | BookDavid McGillivray - Doing Rude Things | The original book launch was at the Scala cinema with an all-day event "British Doing Rude Things". I was there for the 10 hour marathon and then I believe I stayed for the all-nighter too, it was a very long day.

albert 25th Oct 2016 | | MagazineMelody Maker | Probably with some realistic entry prices too. I think in those days bands accepted that it was normal to play gigs in every available venue up and down the country for half of the year and build up a loyal following. Bands these days seem to demand the opposite and then see their careers evaporate overnight.

albert 25th Oct 2016 | | BookVarious Authors - Long Time Gone | ReviewProbably half of this book (about 200 pages worth) is given over to details of Crosby's drug abuse and scouting for drugs, the money he spent on drugs, his ill health because of drugs, and how he let down everybody time and again because of his addiction. The stuff that I wanted to read about, ie the music and the funny stories, is mostly skipped over in short paragraphs between the druggy episodes. The reviews go on about how open and honest the biography is, I just felt that I was reading a drug programme confessional.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - Red Box (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The 208 page book is one of those fact-filled reference books, written by ultra-researcher-fan Mark Lewisohn so you should know what to expect, including observations and comments, photos, press cutting and tickets, facts and lists. The book also includes a very early interview on a flexi-disc. The additional 4 photos are on proper photographic paper.
While HMV sold their own packaged Beatles box sets the Virgin Megastore and a few other shops had these official EMI export items. And Virgin sold them cheaper than buying the 4 CDs individually - what a bargain!

The 176 page book is one of those fact-filled reference books, quite nice too, including photos, interviews, 'who wrote what' by John Lennon, discography of cover versions, musical chronology, articles and comments by George Martin, Richard Lester and leading critics.

The heavyweight book is a 224 page memoir by Geoffrey Giuliano with a run through of the Beatles story, his observations, his comments and some interviews, it has photos and pictures of memorabilia too.

albert 21st Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - It Was Twenty Years Ago Today..... (Export Box Set For Japan) | Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The book is a 287 page memoir around the summer of love by Derek Taylor and is quite entertaining, containing quotes, observations, some photos and general snippets of info, this book is about the whole global scene not just The Beatles. The art print studio has a "G" logo, possibly Genesis since they had published limited Beatles books, the art print is signed and dated 1987 indicating that the box set had been planned before the official release of the first Beatles CDs.
