The Beatles - Past Masters (Export Box Set For Japan)
Here are some pictures of the export box set minus the CDs, which were the same ones as first released in the UK (and Europe I guess). The wonderful 128 page photo book contains many of the most iconic Beatle images.

While HMV sold their own packaged Beatles box sets the Virgin Megastore and a few other shops had these official EMI export items. And Virgin sold them cheaper than buying the 2 Past Master CDs individually - what a bargain!

TV
La Cabina (1972)
I don't know anything about the production of this short, what it was commissioned for etc.
Maybe Spanish TV had a series like this one where the individual items stand by themselves.

The Beatles - Past Masters Volume 2
When The Beatles CDs came out I wanted the whole set, however there was no way I was going to buy these HMV items (see my comment on later complete box). I was nearly tempted by the EMI black roll-top case which had all of the CDs but it was a bit too costly. Instead I found that Virgin had a big pile of EMI 'export for Japan' box sets and not only did the CDs work out cheaper than buying them individually we also got nice goodies like proper books. The boxes were also much more classy and much stronger, all in all a much better buy. (see here).

The Beatles - Complete Compact Disc Collection
This is a nice item but I would like to hear people’s opinions on these HMV box sets as I find them somewhat troubling, and the same goes for all of the HMV packages of Beatles stuff.

HMV was originally the retail shop linked to the Gramophone Company (later EMI group) to sell the records they produced, so all well and good. But when companies get really big they tend to be subdivided to protect the group as a whole, so if one division suffers from a failure then it doesn't bring down the whole group, however these subdivisions also start working independently of each other.

So anyway, prior to the Beatles items, in the late 1980s, HMV produced a 'classic collection' series of box sets including items such as Velvet Underground & Nico, The Doors L.A. Woman, Led Zeppelin 4, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Elvis Presley Sun Collection and one which I bought, Jimi Hendrix Experience Are You Experienced. It was a standard box with a small picture of the album cover stuck on the front and inside was the LP itself plus a booklet and a standard certificate announcing its 'limited edition'. But afterwards it dawned on me that I'd been conned, the LP was on Polydor (not part of EMI) so in fact this was just a re-package of a regular LP with added premium price, what I paid extra for was essentially just the booklet and a sticker, (ignoring the standard box & standard piece of paper).

So my question is what do we really know about these Beatles HMV boxes? were they sanctioned by the Beatles? what is the story? I’d like to know.

Music Collector
I worked at a publishers (non music) for a short while and discovered that it was common practice to include false entries and deliberate mistakes in order to catch out rivals who cribbed/stole the information.

Bandiau Cymreig Wythnosol
I'm not so sure of the accuracy of describing this as a weekly magazine, this particular copy is issue 4, winter 1997/98.
You can read the magazine from front cover to centre page in Welsh, then flip it over and read it again, back cover to centre page in English.

Here is their archived website.

The Hives - Main Offender, Official
Bought at their brilliant London Garage gig 25 October 2001.
This is the official T-shirt from that time, I have seen people trying to sell counterfeits on ebay but they never get the text style right, nor the pink lips.

Spare Snare - Generic
Saw the band, or at least saw Jan, many times in London, The Garage, The Water Rats, Camden Crawl, The Dublin Castle, maybe more and I don't remember where I picked up the T-Shirt although it does plainly state what it is.

Pixies - Sell Out Tour
The Sell Out tour. I think I saw this T-Shirt at the Alexandra Palace gig, but it could have been Brixton, however I do remember deciding that I would not buy the T-Shirt as I wasn't particularly keen on it. Then on my birthday I was given one as a present.

Nebula - Official Band T-Shirt
Bought at their London The Borderline gig, 27 April 2001.
I went to the gig on spec (mainly because On Trial was the support band) and quite enjoyed Nebula, but they must have had some strange mind control going on in order to tempt me to buy the T-shirt as I'd normally steer clear of such screaming clichéd rock n roll imagery.

Bought at the Royal Festival Hall, London gig.
Somehow I ended up with a medium sized shirt so I haven't worn it (although I still managed to splash beer on it).

Cranes - Very Early Official T-shirt
I saw the band a few times in London in their early days, I believe this would be 1989-1990.
The T-shirt was bought at a gig, likely the original Powerhaus but it could have been the Sir George Robey or The T&C2, my memory is hazy on this and in those days I didn't hang onto ticket stubs (or just paid on the door).

The Strokes - First Issue Of Official Logo
Bought at their Brixton Academy gig 28 March 2002. I don't know if the band imported this T-shirt or if it was printed in the UK, but it sure is cheap quality. The band had lots of merch for sale, and high prices if I remember correctly.
If you look closely at the logo you will see that there are differences compared to the logo that they currently flog.
EDIT: I have also included the first Strokes letter inviting me to join their fanclub, for yearly $40 (a whopping amount in 2002, so I declined to join). It has the original Strokes logo too.

Bought this when the band played Underwater Moonlight at The Electric Ballroom, Camden 26 April 2001, I cannot remember if there were different colours available. The T-Shirt was good heavy quality cotton, but I sold it some months back as I was needing to reduce the size of my T-Shirt mountain.

The Rezillos - Retro Cigarette Lighter
The Rezillos played a fab gig at The Underworld (11 December 2011) and I happily bought a couple of their T-Shirts, the lighter came as a freebie because I spent over £20 or something.

Now as much as I love The Rezillos, I don't smoke, so the lighter got sold.
