First time a female singer appeared on a Kaye disc, and it was a one time shot. Elaine Beatty was the the winner of a talent contest held by the Cincinnati Coin-Op Association. The prize was a Kaye recording date. Blessed with good material. great pipes and excellent phrasing, she pulls the date off nicely. This didn’t seem to bud an expected career, though, and she was really not heard from again. Petrillo’s ban locking musicians out of recording studios after July 31 probably didn’t help.

When The Stevens Hotel opened in 1927, it was considered the World’s largest hotel. Described as a city within a city, it sported a large movie theatre, a ballroom, a 27 chair barber shop, a bowling alley, a pharmacy, a candy store and many other amenities. Despite being a big attraction, it struggled to turn a profit, the depression magnifying its woes. The insurance company magnates the Stevens family tried some unethical practices to keep it afloat, but the city seized the hotel shortly after these sessions, selling it to the US Army. During WW2, it served as housing for military recruits. Conrad Hilton purchased the property in 1945, refurbished it, and it still stands in Chicago as one of that city’s fine historic hotels, still under the Hilton banner

DeweyGill SUBS 26th Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMArthur Godfrey - Slap 'er Down, Agin, Paw / I'd Give A Million Tomorrows (For Just One Yesterday) | @ edlongus: I have had to eliminate many songs from my playlists as the years have gone by. Any song from the 20’s that uses the term “darkies” of which there are many, like “Mississippi Mud” . People used to take in consideration that these terms were not considered derogatory when the records were made. Other titles are more obvious- “Get Cannibal” -Joe Haymes (mx 73032-1), Tommy Dorsey- If The Man In The Moon Were A Coon” (what were they thinking there? It was 1940 already), Clarence Williams “You’re Bound To Look Like A Monkey When You Get Old” . These do illustrate how far we’ve developed as a society, and I’ve never thought such history should be erased as it serves as a reminder of our cultural development. Even as recent as the 1960’s, we had songs like “Dumb Head” by Ginny Arnell, Jack Jones’ “Wives And Lovers”and plenty of teeners and country records that put women in a subservient role. Others from the ‘50’s like Jimmy McCracklin’s “Get Tough” and Sugarboy Crawford’s ”Watch Her Whip Her” seemed to promote spousal abuse.

DeweyGill SUBS 26th Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMJoan Hager - I Feel Like Cryin' / Teardrops Won't Stop Falling | Joan gets the Patti Page multi- track vocal treatment on the top side.
“Vocal by:
Joan Hager
Joan Hager
Joan Hager”
Scant information on this singer except that she was based in Nashville during her recording career. Shortly after this release, she was granted a divorce, her husband stating her music career ruined the marriage. They were married In Kentucky sometime in the late 1940’s. I found no death notice or obituary, so there is a chance she is still living. Her daughter died recently at 72, that 2023 obit states she was survived by her mother. Maiden name Bell (?).
Joan was a rather prolific songwriter, her songs recorded by Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, others.

DeweyGill SUBS 26th Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMArthur Godfrey - Slap 'er Down, Agin, Paw / I'd Give A Million Tomorrows (For Just One Yesterday) | Over the 43 years that I’ve hosted a radio show, this was a listener favorite. At least it was for the first few decades. Over the last dozen years or so, I’ve played it much less frequently, being wary of the PC crowd , maybe once a year or two. People were missing the social satire of it. I dug it out again about 18 months ago, as I had a request for it. This time an angry listener complained loudly to the station manager, and in turn I was told to never play it again (and apologize!). No one has a sense of humor any more. Sheesh! Slapped down again.
