The Coasters - Wake Me, Shake Me
The Snake And The Bookworm is a strange edition. Not the same as the single release, it is missing the group refrains of the title between the verses. There is just empty instrumental fill there. All reissues were this way, I'd like to know why.

Connie Francis - 26 Greatest Hits (Audiophile Version)
This is another one of those disc titles that's a joke. 26 Greatest Hits? I count half a dozen, from her first hits package in 1960 only. The rest being album songs. But at least they state that in the contents.

Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / Lorin Maazel - Sibelius: Symphony No.1, Karelia Suite
Review
I've had a chance to listen to this on computer, using a 32-bit fp conversion, with external stereo speakers. While allowing that it's not the full DSD sound, the sound is smoother and fuller than CD. But compared to my vinyl recording the tone is not as pleasant to me. Not as full and rounded, with harsher treble and less bass. I will be drawn to listen to my 64-bit recording of my vinyl.
But the labels are right to give attention to the Maazel Vienna recordings. I consider them the best of Sibelius' symphonies.

Fats Domino - Fats Domino Sings Million Record Hits
Review
This amounts to a Volume 2 of his hits, almost. It has some great hits from 1959, some fair hits. Then it's one of those head-scratchers about what the executives were thinking.
A1, A2, A5, B1, B6 did not chart but four of these were flip sides of hits, which are not included: Rose Mary (1953), Wait And See, Valley Of Tears, and The Big Beat.
So it's only moderately interesting. By the way the stereo LP has only mono songs.
"Million Record Hits" is a blatantly deceptive title. Actually there's not a single gold record on this. But two of the missing hits were gold.
Volume 1 would be Fats Domino Swings. Volume 3 is the one titled (also deceptively) Million Sellers.

S.H.E. (1980)
Review
Review
Some reviews from old Movie Guide books. Reviews are dropped from later editions for minor films.

Leonard Maltin 1993:
James Bondish derring-do involving a woman superspy who crosses swords with a suave playboy head of an international crime ring. (S*H*E stands for security hazards expert.) Script by Bond veteran Richard Maibaum. Average.

Steven Scheuer 1990:
Slick production values, exotic location shooting, and the beautiful Cornelia Sharpe as a sexy female James Bond-type are the draws here. S*H*E (Securities Hazards Expert) is hot on the trail of international blackmailers who plan to jeopardize the world's oil supply if their demands aren't met. 2/4

Martin and Porter 2003:
This average made-for-TV spy-action thriller has one twist .. a female James Bond. Beautiful Cornelia Sharpe is S.H.E. (Security Hazards Expert). She pursues Robert Lansing, the US syndicate boss, throughout Europe. Omar Sharif makes an appearance as a wine baron. 3/5

Richard Maibaum, James Bond writer, wrote a big-time screenplay but the result was weak.
The entire film is available at Youtube at the moment but beware the shape is all wrong.

Abbreviating the title with a character other than period creates a problem for search. I don't take the + seriously, it was a decorative way of abbreviating.

Bobby Curtola - Curtola
Review
They stopped trying to issue pop-rock hits on the Tartan label in 1969. Then Bobby shifted to contemporary pop, continuing to work with Basil Hurdon as his manager. This one is super-rare. Way Down Deep received airplay in Canada. Playing With Fire is a surprise, written by the Hurdon brothers, it's back to his 1960s rock and roll style sounding around 1968, and quite great. But otherwise the album is nothing strong or desirable.

Satin Dolls - The Johnny Knorr Story
A 26 minute documentary by Michael Drew Shaw. The orchestra was popular in the mid-west from 1960 on as a Big Band revival band. There is some mention of some of the great female vocalists at the start. Some footage of his orchestra playing in some ballrooms.
I have a DVD I could sell.

Marty Robbins - More Greatest Hits
Review
This album was a mixed bag. One of those where you question what the record executives sitting in plush chairs were thinking. I mean some giant hits and some questionable filler.
They omitted Five Brothers, which was one of his most exciting singles in 1960 and charted, but included the lame flip side Ride Cowboy Ride which was nothing. Five Brothers just must have been too strong for their minds.
I do recall hearing Streets Of Laredo on the radio in Canada and possibly Red River Valley, but find no record of singles issued. I don't understand what happened there.
Others here were flip sides and were good, altho Saddle Tramp is lame.
At least the title is not "12 Million Sellers".
After this Marty had Vol.3 and Vol.4 Hits albums, and they also were scattered in their choices. You had to seek out Volume 3 to get the classic Devil Woman.
So the hits on here were A1, A3, B1, B4, B6. El Paso really started a new phase in Marty's career, so the division between Vol.1 and this one is significant.

Teresa Brewer - We Love You Fats
Review
This one was never reissued on CD, so it's easy to overlook. In her jazz releases she never again equalled her Duke Ellington and Count Basie albums. This was an easy-going recording with three instrumentalists. Earl Hines' piano stands out thruout. The title song was something Teresa and the others wrote saying a few words about Fats - "we love you Fats, cause you knew where it's ats ..."
Two Sleepy People is also a piano instrumental by Hines, running right into the vocal as one track. The two instros were not written by Waller.
The 1983 reissue LP did not have a foldout cover.

M.A.N.T.I.S. (1994 - 1995)
Review
When Fox TV was young a few people got a chance to see this superhero one-hour series. A variation on the suit that makes you invincible. It was typically well produced, with some weaknesses.
In the 1980s media violence was increasing and people were expecting 1990s violence. But the tide turned, and here the producers purposely toned it down. But to the point of eliminating it and killing it. The M.A.N.T.I.S. would not don his suit til the last five minutes, then just walk onto the crime scene and take control. No hitting or fighting or throwing or smashing for Pete's sake. So a waste of time and it did not last the season.

TekWar (1994 - 1996)
At the start Torri Higginson was playing Evigan's assistant. This was an appealing female. I think I made the fatal error of mentionning this to a feminist member of the establishment at the time. Next thing I knew Torri was off the show and then some hard-edged masculine female replaces her - Lexa Doig.
Lessons learned too late. Be deathly careful what ya say to whom. or something.

A Promise Kept - The Oksana Baiul Story
Review
The story takes you from her infancy to her Olympic win in 1994. This filming seems very suited for females, being extremely sentimental. Monica Keena does a fine job representing Oksana, and at the end she morphs into the real Oksana who skates The Swan as a finale. Curiously Monica's name is not featured as a lead actor in promotional credits.
The TV movie and the 1990s cassette release did not get much attention, seemingly because of western bias. I see the DVD with limited availability at Amazon.
The top and bottom of the picture has been cropped to create the widescreen TV ratio. I suppose casual viewers will not notice a problem, but us videophiles might object to losing some of Oksana's legs during skates. The technical specifications embedded in the DVD are confused and state that the shape is 4:3, and some computer players might not render it correctly. Video and audio are fine. Length is 1:32.
We are waiting for this site to make accomodations for TV movies.
