jago125 29th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMDon Azpiazu And His Havana Casino Orchestra - The Peanut Vendor / True And Sincere Love | The original American release of this English Export issue is on the site under catalogue no. 22483.
'N' in the shellac indicates pressed in 1953? Making it a re-press.
jago125 25th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Tiger Rag Part 1 / Tiger Rag Part 2 | A late pressing with 'RT' purchase tax code, October 1955 to June 1957.
An excellent dubbed master is used on this late pressing.
jago125 24th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMLuis Russell - New Rhythm Style Series No. 101 And 102 | Added 'ST' tax code labels, circa 1946/47.
This particular re-press uses a dubbed master complete with a run-in groove for the Louis Armstrong side - the same dub found on the American red Columbia re-issue series.
jago125 23rd Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMVarious Artists - Black And White Rhythm Style Series No.1 & 2 | Has 'ST' code in the shellac.
I have not seen this series before and was it continued? If it wasn't, maybe WW2 put paid to it.
Catalogue number suggests a late 1936 release.
jago125 23rd Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMWoody Herman - Dallas Blues / Blue Evening | This pressing has a 'T' purchase tax code (21 Oct. 1940-14 Apr. 1942) in the shellac.
jago125 21st Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMBix Beiderbecke - Second New Rhythm Style Series, No. 129 & 130 | Here are some clearer pics. of a 'T' code pressing (October 1940 to April 1942). As it also bears a 'TT' stamp, this means that the record did not sell until 'TT' was in force (April 1943 to October 1946). Incidentally, when the 'TT' code was imposed, it was levied at a rate of 100%, which effectively doubled the price of a 10" Parlophone Rhythm Style record!
[The new labels have now been moved up. Mod.]
jago125 21st Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMFrank Crumit - Abdul Abulbul Amir / The Gay Caballero | The original American issue was already on this site, re.Decca 114.
Both tracks recorded: August 17, 1934.
Apart from knowing that this 78 has a TT code,I have no idea when it was first released in Ireland.
jago125 20th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMWoody Herman - Night Watchman / Hey Doc! | Added images for this entry.
A & B incorrect in the text and image written details.
[Thanks! Entry has now been fixed. Mod.]
jago125 19th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMFrank Crumit - Abdul Abulbul Amir / The Gay Caballero | Apparently sold in Cork, County Cork, Ireland.
Label is an attractive shade of green, my images do it justice.
In the shellac purchase tax code 'TT' which is for 14th April 1943 to 9th April 1946.
I believe the original issue was on American Decca c.1933/34 and a re-recording of Crumit's old hits.
jago125 19th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMOriginal Dixieland Jazz Band - Tiger Rag / Jazz Me Blues | Added different design labels. Mine are TT purchase tax code; those already shown are ST.
Yes, my copy has full-colour label on one side, and the other side hasn't! (I've seen that before on English HMV's ).
jago125 15th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMFrank Luther - Left My Gal In The Mountains / Gonna Lay Me Down In The Cold, Cold Ground | The A-side of this Brunswick is titled "Left My Gal In The Mountains".
jago125 12th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMBlue Rhythm Boys - Blue Rhythm / Blue Flame | T in the shellac and DT paper stamp indicates this record was pressed sometime between 21/10/40 to 13/04/43. These code letters were Purchase Tax, a forerunner of VAT, levied on items considered to be a luxury.
jago125 10th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington - Rent Party Blues / Doin' The Voom Voom | Has the same matrix markings as Brunswick 02365.
jago125 9th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMEvelyn Künneke - Sing', Nachtigall, sing'.. / Frosch-Ballade (Hört die traurige Geschichte) | Moderator; I have based year of release on the similar 78 already on the site.(could be 1943 maybe?).
Couldn't figure out meaning of Leigt: against Michael Jary' name.
jago125 28th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington - Tiger Rag Part 1 / Tiger Rag Part 2 | Moderator; soultwinz' images need to be moved up. Nice to see them.
6510 is not strictly a reissue of 4238 as it uses take A for Part 1. In fact, it follows English Brunswick 1338 and German Brunswick A 9279, both of which were released August 1932.
[Images have been moved and dated. Mod.]
jago125 25th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington - Black Beauty / Maple Leaf Rag | It was extremely difficult to obtain good images due to colour washout - hence B-side not cropped as usual.
Original release of Maple Leaf Rag Decca (USA) 218.
jago125 23rd Aug 2019 | | 78 RPM"T" Toll's Swingtown Five - New Swing-Style Series No. 3 & 4 | Both sides recorded in London, July 3, 1936.

jago125 21st Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Tiger Rag, Part 1 / Tiger Rag, Part 2 | Yes. It can't be seen in the pics. but it bears the UK purchase tax code covering end of '42-'43 in the shellac. I wish I knew when it was released though!
Being a Decca BM series (B for Brunswick recordings - M for variety) a lot of them got sold in Europe, so it's a kind of export label too.
(Of course, English Brunswick 1338/01338 was exactly the same record and is in fact a first issue released in August 1932 and remaining in print for a long time).
jago125 20th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Tiger Rag, Part 1 / Tiger Rag, Part 2 | This is a 1942/43 pressing.
jago125 2nd Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMThe Jungle Band - Wang Wang Blues / Some Of These Days | added images of an early Warner pressing - possibly from 1931.
Wang-Wang Blues recorded; Monday, October 27,1930 in New York, N.Y.,with Dick Robertson and Bennie Payne vocal.
Original first issue was Brunswick 6003 released January 29,1931.(Also on this site).
jago125 25th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMThe Jungle Band - Maori / Admiration | Submitted images with minor variations (position of Fox Trot and different style cat. numbers. Also underlining of 'B' cat. number).
Here's some info from the booklet with the GRP 36402 "EARLY ELLINGTON" CD set:
4776 release date: May 22, 1930.
This (first version, with banjo evident) of "Maori" recorded February 21, 1930 (at a different session).
"Admiration" recorded March 20, 1930 and Copyright Application shows "ADMIRATION: HAWAIIAN IDYLL".
Composer: W. H.Tyers.

jago125 18th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMOrchestre De Danse "Godwin" - Les Promesses / Vas-y Ma Poupée | Moderator: there are several Reneyphone on discogs. One example (F.42514) is given as from 1925. Apparently, they used many master recordings from German Polydor. This one, is older with endless raised outer rims in the lands before the playing grooves and is heavy at 290 g. !
and an order no. 2000 lower, which is why I have tentatively entered it from 1923 - it may well be older although, according to one source, Paul Godwin began recording in 1923.
jago125 2nd Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMPrimo Scala's Accordeon Band - Empty Saddles / Around And Round The Old Bandstand | Year of recording and release is 1936.
jago125 1st Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMJack Payne - A Little Church Around The Corner / Tune In | Just five records later issued by the band, this recording of "A Little Church Around The Corner" (matrix: F-931,with pipe organ added) appeared again as the B-side of Rex 8300 by the band. It's also on the site.
jago125 30th Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMGroßes Harmonie-Orchester - Alexander-Marsch / Supporter-Marsch | Moderator; sorry,it was my mistake to make this query. I was preoccupied with a similar label and dated item.
jago125 27th Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Rent Party Blues / Doin' The Voom Voom | Both sides of these 1929 recordings are pressed from dubbed masters on this 1934 American Brunswick re-issue. Does anyone know why they didn't (or couldn't) use the original master stampers? It wasn't for the sake of adding run-in grooves because there are none. The English and French issues are also made with these dubs.
jago125 20th Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMThe Jungle Band - Paducah / Harlem Flat Blues | Moderator: added images of earlier label type without the U.S.A. patent number shown immediately below the Brunswick logo. Also position of 'foxtrot' is higher up, accordingly. There are some subtle differences of position of the cat. number.
jago125 10th Jun 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Jungle Band - Dreamy Blues / Runnin' Wild | Moderator: I believe "Runnin' Wild" is actually the B side of this French issue à la original USA issue. In the dead wax (run-off) is stamped A500139 on the side which later became known as Mood Indigo, in order for "Barney" Bigard's name to be added to the composer credits.
Other members/collectors might also like to know that on the proper A-side is stamped "Fabrique en France Mechan.Copt.1931."
