LaurenceD SUBS 9th Mar 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Addison - Tom Jones | Many discographies list this as released in 1963, but I think that the U.S. release was not available until around March of 1964, based on the trade journals.
The UK release is indeed from 1963, and this U.S. cover shows ©1963.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2021 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Police Court / Disorder In The Court | There is a variant label which shows a 1947 copyright, and "A product of Lord & Roberts Recording Co., Los Angeles, CA"
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumBernie Wayne - ...And Then I Wrote-- | Ok, I'll admit that I owned this LP for quite a while before I noticed Bernie sitting there on the right side of the cover photo... :-)
BTW it appears that he signed this copy.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumIke And Tina Turner Revue - Live | Tina Turner is actually credited as "Tina" on tracks A1,B4,B5.
Jimmy Thomas (A2) is credited as "Jerry Thomas" on the cover track listing.
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Mar 2021 | | CD AlbumCream - Concerthouse | Koiné appears to be one of those semi-legit Italian labels releasing old concert recordings - note the "Over 20 Years Old" disclaimer.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - The Girl From Atlantic City / Her First Swimming Lesson | The b-side is a recording by female impersonator Ray Bourbon, originally released on Western Record Co. Bourbana WR-717.
This Good-Humor label seems to have specialized in pirated copies of adult comedy recordings, omitting the original performer credits. Note the matrix numbers on the releases. I would like to be able to cross-reference some more of these Good-Humor releases... David Diehl's "Blue Pages" site at hensteeth.com has much useful information, but unfortunately seems to be no longer available. I wonder if there is an archived copy.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPMBilly Mitchell - Rubbin' / Johnny's Hot Rod | Anybody know why Dootsie Williams' Blue label released certain items on this Blu variant? Have not found any info so far...
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Unfolding - How To Blow Your Mind And Have A Freak-Out Party | Looking at that insert/coupon for the "accessory kit", I thought it might have been a joke at first, but it seems to have been legit. How many people do you suppose actually sent away for it?
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Feb 2021 | | Classical ItemMinneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Antal Dorati - Kodály's Háry János Suite | Part of Mercury's initial release of 12 stereo tape items (all stacked inline format). The Billboard article gives the release date of July 18, 1957.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Feb 2021 | | CD AlbumCream - Disraeli Gears | I see that we have the standard cat# here (823 636-2), along with scans from a BMG Direct issue. In addition there is separate item here with the BMG cat# (D104898).
I think that we have usually been combining the regular issue with the BMG variant in such cases IINM. If there are no objections I will merge the two items and add a couple of scans (inlay, disc) from the regular issue.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Feb 2021 | | CD AlbumCream - Fresh Cream | Added scans for a somewhat different insert for the same USA issue. Possibly a later printing, because I see that they corrected the composer credits for "Sweet Wine".
I think that this item is from 1986, but am unable to verify as yet.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Feb 2021 | | Reel-to-ReelThe Ray Charles Singers - Songs For Latin Lovers | Nah, this is a different Ray Charles. As far as I know, he has no releases credited as just "Ray Charles".
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumBobby Darin - Inside Out | Added images for front cover (complete, with acknowledgment to davie gordon) and labels.
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumDan Murphy - The Dan Murphy Show | Boom Trenchard’s Flare Path was an airport-themed restaurant just east of Lindbergh Field in San Diego, active in the 1970s.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPM白虹 (Bai Hong) - 寻梦曲 / 你是天風 | Still working out the composer credits...
I listed the b-side title as written, with the traditional '風', though most modern references use the simplfied '风' resulting in "你是天风".
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPMArt Mace - The Prisoner's Song / I Want Your Love | Same song pairing as Sunset 1165 by Charles Beauchamp
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Feb 2021 | | CD AlbumElvis Costello And The Attractions - Goodbye Cruel World | Note the copyright date on the disc :-)
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPMEfrem Zimbalist - Old Black Joe / Massa's In De Cold, Cold Ground | Not sure about that release date; it was listed in the Victor Red Seal Records 1923 catalogue.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumHank Thompson With The Brazos Valley Boys - Most Of All | Added scans for cover back and labels; note that the two label scans { 2545149, 2545150 } are from the same disc.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumPaul Robeson - Favorite Songs | Added scans for alternate front cover and labels. I don't know enough about the Monitor label to say which one might be an earlier pressing. Note to edlongus: I changed the release date - MP 580 was definitely released in 1959, not sure where the 1968 date came from... :-)
Also set this as a mono release; there was a reprocessed stereo version (MPS/MFS 580) which may have appeared sometime later, not sure.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Feb 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumDennis Farnon, Jim Backus, Daws Butler - Magoo In Hi-Fi | Re: my side 1 label scan (2545108); if you look closely, you can see the faint impression of a different label: Tommy Dorsey "Yes Indeed!" LPM-1229, side 2.
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMBlanka - Just One Of Those Things / Easy To Love | I believe that this singer is Blanka Perić, who is featured on various RCA Victor recordings in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She had performed in Europe before the war.
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMCount Basie - Time On My Hands / For The Good Of The Country | Added scan for b-side label titled "For The Good Of Your Country"; also note the "Basie" composer credit. The a-side label is identical to image 1097884.
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMBix Beiderbecke - Bix And Tram | The Billboard reviewer described the caricatures on the cover as "bizarre and unbefitting"
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMBix Beiderbecke - Jazz As It Should Be Played | Added variant label images for discs 1-3; my disc 4 labels are identical to images { 1560371, 1560372 }. My cover has some differences as well: the binding is black rather than red; and there is no advert on the inside rear cover.
I read George Avakian's remarks in the liner notes regarding "Sweet Sue" about the transfer from its original 12-inch release (Columbia 50103-D); He states that the intro was dropped for this pressing, but it sounds like the whole track to me - I timed it at ~ 4:30
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jan 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Dave Brubeck Octet - Old Sounds From San Francisco | There are indeed 6 banded tracks on side 2, but the conflicting sleeve and label listings are somewhat confusing. I listed them as shown on the label, but upon listening: track 5 contains "You Go To My Head" and track 6 contains "Laura" plus the brief "Closing Theme". I'm still sorting out just which themes constitute track 4...
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Jan 2021 | | CD AlbumChicken Shack - Forty Blue Fingers, Freshly Packed And Ready To Serve | I've got a copy of this release and I do not see the cat# 474607-2 anywhere on it, only COL 477357 2. Was the primary cat# put in there inadvertently or perhaps am I missing something...
[Mod: this entry ammended]
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMRaymond Turner [gospel] - City Of Gold / Calvary | The Sabbath Music label was founded in 1948; by 1950 it had been renamed to Chapel Records.
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Jan 2021 | | 78 RPMRay Turner [gospel] - I Am Satisfied / Down Deep In The Sea | Ray Turner (1908-2008): Bass singer for the gospel quartet the Lone Star Four, later renamed as the King's Heralds, from 1927-1947.
